Air filtration is something to keep in mind! Far too often, air filters end up looking like this...

When air filters get this much build up on them, indoor air quality goes down and the amount of air restriction goes up! This is not only harmful to your HVAC system, but it can also be harmful to you and your family.

Remember, what the filter is catching are dead skin particles, dust particles, and other contaminants!

Out with the old and in with the new! All the wiring is in conduit. The condensate drain has a trap. The ducts were insulated and we installed a sheet metal cover for them. We set the unit on a pair of pads to get it off the ground.

We do it right! Every time!

Some air conditioners and heat pumps live a long life. At some point, those units will fail. When they do fail, you don't want to have an over-sized, inefficient (costly to operate), poorly installed system to take its place!

This is the original unit, somewhere around 20 years old. It's a Carrier package unit, and they cut a few corners on the install. The return duct was insulated with a blue tarp! Also, bricks were stacked along each side of the supply and return ducts to "weatherize" and keep pests out... Notice the water hose sticking out where the condensate comes out..

This is a condenser coil on a heat pump, and it was in desperate need of service. The coil is caked with dirt and dust. This is quite common over an extended amount of time or in particularly dusty areas.

Even though your unit is still doing a "good job", does NOT mean there isn't a need for service.

More MYTHS.....

1. Bigger is always better.

False. Bigger than necessary is inefficient. If your unit is over-sized, it will short-cycle. This means that it will turn on and off many times throughout the day. Short-cycling is bad news for your units longevity and maybe worse news to your energy bill.

2. If there's nothing wrong with your system, then there's no need for a professional.

Huge myth. Regular maintenance is the best way to keep your system in good shape, and it's also a great way to spot potential problems before they cause damage. It's probably more economical to have regular maintenance performed than to wait til the unit breaks down.

3. Change filters once a month.

While this is true in some cases, it's not across the board. The best advice on this topic is to simply check your return air filter periodically. When its a bit dirty... that's okay. Leave it in there. When it gets a little dirtier...maybe replace it, maybe not. Be the judge on this, just change it when its dirty. JUST DON'T FORGET ABOUT IT.

With these warmer temperatures and high humidity levels we are seeing, there's no doubt that each of our air conditioners and heat pumps are having to work a bit harder to keep things cool. Unfortunately, when our HVAC units work harder, it raises our electric bill.

It's very likely that you've heard the MYTHS on how to save money. Just know that they are MYTHS indeed.

1. Closing vents in unused rooms saves energy.

This is false. Unless your HVAC duct system is "zoned", your unit will always be supplying cool air to every room of your house. Closing vents disrupts the airflow and it will cause your unit to work harder. In other words, it puts a strain on your system.

2. Closing doors to unused rooms will save energy.

Again, this is not true. Closing doors also restricts airflow. With the combination of closed vents and closed doors in a room, you will actually be doing much more harm than good.

3. The location of your thermostat doesn't matter.

This is a huge MYTH. Your thermostat controls your system, so its placement is made strategically. You don't want to install it on a wall directly in front of a window with the sun shining on it. It will run more than necessary. Also, you don't want to place in near the path of a supply vent. It won't run long enough. Actually, you want your thermostat installed somewhere near your air handler or furnace because that's where your return air is traveling to.

There are more myths out there, and we'll cover them next time.

Are you planning on building a new home or doing major remodeling? If so, are you planning on having a bottom of the line heating and cooling system installed? It may be cheaper up front, but we have seen the headaches that poor installations can cause...

Each and every home should have HVAC equipment that

1) is designed specifically for the home
2) meets or exceeds minimum code requirements
3) if permits were required for the job, were they acquired???
