In 1955, Pope Pius XII instituted this feast to reclaim the true meaning of human labor. By placing it on May 1, the same day as International Workers’ Day, he sought to show that work is not merely a material necessity but a sacred participation in God’s creation. St. Joseph reminds us that our daily efforts have eternal value when offered to the Lord.
St. Joseph is a unique model for all of us. As St. Josemaría Escrivá pointed out, the greatest male saint in the history of the Church was not a member of the clergy or a monk. He was a husband, a layman, and a simple carpenter. In the Gospels, Joseph draws little attention to himself. He listens, obeys, and carries out the mission God gave him. It is a simple but powerful path to holiness that we can all follow in our own lives.
