When Power Requirements Increase, the Details Matter

As power generation and distribution systems evolve, manufacturers are being asked to move more power through equipment while balancing space, heat, reliability, and manufacturability.
That puts greater importance on the components carrying the current.

A well-designed busbar is more than a piece of conductive metal. Material selection, conductor size, geometry, bend design, connection points, plating, insulation, and thermal performance all play a role in how that component performs within the larger system.
And those decisions are easier to address before production begins.

Storm Power Components works with customers from early design through production, manufacturing custom copper and aluminum busbars for demanding power applications. When design assistance is needed, our engineering team can help evaluate manufacturability, material selection, geometry, and other considerations before the design reaches the production floor.

Because as power requirements become more demanding, getting the details right from the beginning matters.

Plating Aluminum: It Starts Before the Plating Tank

Plating aluminum busbars comes with a unique challenge: aluminum begins forming a natural oxide layer almost immediately when exposed to air.

That oxide layer is one of the reasons aluminum is naturally corrosion resistant, but it also makes achieving a reliable plated finish more complex.

Unlike copper, successfully plating aluminum requires a carefully controlled preparation process before the final finish is applied.

Why does that matter?

Surface preparation is critical. The natural oxide layer must be properly addressed to create a surface suitable for plating.

Adhesion matters. The effectiveness of the finished coating depends heavily on what happens before the final plating layer is applied.

Contact areas matter. In electrical applications, plating may be specified to provide the desired surface characteristics at critical connection points.
Part design matters, too. Geometry, holes, bends, and other features can influence how a component moves through the finishing process and the consistency of the final result.

At Storm Power Components, aluminum plating isn't a new capability for us. We've been working with aluminum busbars and their unique finishing requirements for years.

From fabrication and forming to plating and final inspection, understanding the entire manufacturing process helps us identify potential challenges before they become problems.

Sometimes the most important part of a plated busbar is what happens before you ever see the plating.
