No snow days all year here in Denver due to a record-breaking low snowfall total…until yesterday - May 6th! The students were tasked with sending their robot snowmen pics. Never one to back down from a challenge….

And just like that, the season comes to an end for the Kraken. It’s a little crazy to go from the high of competing to knowing that you have to wait 6 months to compete again. But, this too shall pass and there’s so much outreach, learning and growing to do in the meantime!

Congratulations to the team for winning the Gracious Professionalism award at the Denver Regional (second year in a row!) This was partially due to our relationship with RobUL from the Czech Republic and we are forever grateful for that ongoing friendship. It was a wonderful event and we’re so excited for next year!

The Kraken welcomes Team #9585, RobUL, back to the shop! All the way from the Czech Republic, old friendships from last year were rekindled, t-shirts were traded, dinner was had, oh and some robot stuff happened too! Robul - Robot Ústí

These are keepers for sure! How to know when a mentor is happy with how things are going.

We are a relatively small team at 33 students on a good day. Typically, we’ll average about 15-20 in the shop any given day. This year, 18 of those 33 students are new! We have 5 seniors and 1 junior - the rest are underclassmen, mostly freshman. We’ve had a banner year of outreach and recruitment thanks to a new bilingual mentor.

So going 12 hrs away to Flagstaff, after a long bus ride, some students being away from home for the first time without parents, and competing at a large regional event on week #2 was a big event! It was not without its challenges - sick students, emotional drainage, long hours, learning more about GP than students thought possible, sometimes being bored scouting…

But here’s the clincher - our mostly rookie team, with sophomore programmers, an 8th and 9th grade scouting captain duo, a freshman operator, and a sophomore build lead brought their scrappy robot, significantly student produced, and were the 2nd pick of the third place alliance, ending up as finalists of the competition! We couldn’t beat the #1 alliance power house consisting of Team Taters from Idaho (of course), and Pair of Dice Robotics from Las Vegas (again, of course) with their ~ 400+ pt matches, but won every other elimination match up! Amazing! We see great things in our future!
