CLEORA PARK OPENING |
Valerian capped off a very busy week with the opening of Cleora Park in Salida! Located in the heart of the Confluent Park Neighborhood, this new spot offers something for everyone—from accessible trails and natural play elements like boulders and log steppers, to colorful, low-water pollinator gardens.
We loved collaborating with the City of Salida Parks and Recreation team to bring this vibrant, multifunctional park to life. Designed for residents and visitors of all ages, features include:

•Accessible Trails & Gathering Spaces: Seamless connectivity with comfortable seating and a central plaza.

•Scenic Views: A custom shade structure positioned for prime views of the Arkansas Hills and Sawatch Range.

•Natural Play: Integrated boulders and log steppers for nature-based play.

•Sustainable Landscape: A rich mix of evergreen and deciduous trees, colorful low-water pollinator plantings, and a newly installed irrigation system.

As native seed establishment gets underway to wrap up this phase, we look forward to seeing this space thrive for years to come. We’re so grateful to team up with the City of Salida Parks and Recreation on this project. Be sure to stop by, enjoy the shade, and take in the view!

GES PROGRAM OPEN HOUSE |
The Globeville Elyria-Swansea (GES) Program of Projects Open House hosted by the City and County of Denver took place on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the newly opened Carpio-Sanguinette Park / Heron Pond Open Space. The focus of the open house was to provide updates and public feedback on neighborhood improvements, infrastructure projects, and local programs in Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea. Valerian and Wilson & Company were on hand to discuss the 48th Avenue Greenway and Phase 3 of the Globeville Levee. Highlights included gathering community feedback on Phase 3 Levee visioning concepts and sharing our team’s educational component designs for the 48th Avenue Greenway, currently under construction. Thank you to all the community members who attended and contributed their valuable insights!

COSA 2026: Caring for the Commons
Valerian had a fantastic time attending the annual COSA Conference in stunning Crested Butte. Beyond the vibrant fall foliage, the week was packed with insightful presentations, immersive field trips, and engaging Mountain Film screenings at the Center for the Arts Crested Butte. A clear, resounding takeaway from the sessions: preserving our open spaces requires continuous, strong collaboration with stakeholders, communities, and organizations.

NIVER PARK OPEN SPACE |
Perfect weather for a Walk in the Ward!
We were thrilled to join the City of Thornton, City Council members and residents for an early evening stroll through the Niver Creek Open Space. This "Walk in the Ward" series is such a great way for neighbors to connect and see the latest improvements in their community.
Alongside our partners at Naranjo Civil Constructors, our team at Valerian loved touring the site and chatting with everyone. Stream Landscape Architecture & Planning, who also provided design and installation for portions of the open space, collaborated with Valerian where there was overlap in some locations. Valerian provided design for:

•Restoration & Revegetation along Niver Creek

•Trail Improvements & Nodes featuring soft surfacing, seating, and educational signage on local history, flora, and fauna

•Nature Exploration Zone complete with accessible pathways, climbing boulders, logs, and a colorful, giant snake sculpture designed for imaginative play

CASFM 2026 | Last week Valerian was happy to sponsor and attend the annual Colorado Stormwater and Floodplain Managers conference in Steamboat Springs.

Becca spoke on the Jackass Gulch improvements project in a great presentation with some of the project team. Brent continued his traditional role as session moderator and Cassie sat on a panel for community outreach with GLO Ambassadors 🦋 .

As a platinum sponsor we hosted the Thursday evening happy hour. It was a very busy week of learning and catching up with our industry friends. Great job to everyone who worked to organize this conference, see you all next year!

48th AVENUE OUTFALL AND GREENWAY |
The shade structures are up at the 48th outfall! They add a great geometric pop to the look of the space while giving future visitors some much-needed relief from the sun.
Construction on the 48th Avenue Greenway is now underway and will provide connectivity between local parks and trail systems, for the Globeville community and beyond.

RECEPTION ON THE RIVER | It was a fantastic evening connecting with colleagues and industry partners at The Greenway Foundation's annual Reception on the River!

As the region’s largest supporter of river and environmental stewardship, The Greenway Foundation plays an integral role in keeping the South Platte cleaner, safer, and more accessible for everyone. Valerian was proud to support this vital mission as a "Confluence" sponsor of this year's event.

From great live music and food to meaningful conversations about the future of our urban waterways, it was a wonderful night spent in excellent company!

VAN BIBBER CREEK BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION |
Construction progress at Van Bibber Creek this week includes placement of the bridge at McIntyre Street and more to come! The bridge crosses over Van Bibber creek complete with a dedicated recreational trail underpass and adjoining eight-foot sidewalks/bike lanes. Van Bibber Creek trail connects local regional paths linking towards Ralston Creek, Clear Creek, and nearby open space corridors.
Check active Jefferson County Open Space notices before heading out, as ongoing regional park development and habitat work may affect different trail segments.

WALK IN THE WARD | Collaborative community planning in action!

The City of Thornton's “Walk in the Ward” series is a summer neighborhood event hosted by the City of Thornton where City Council members and residents walk the neighborhood in the early evening to discuss concerns, identify areas needing improvement, and highlight recent projects in each ward. It’s an opportunity for neighbors to connect, converse, and celebrate the improvements happening in their ward. This month, the walk took place at the recently completed Skylake Ranch Open Space.
Valerian, alongside our partners at Designscapes Colorado, was thrilled to be on-site to tour the 9.4-acre space and engage with the community.

The design focused heavily on accessibility and natural preservation, it features:

•A Nature Exploration Zone with unstructured play, shade shelters and benches

•Accessible trail connections to the Union Ditch Regional Trail

•Solar lighting

•Revegetation with native seeding and careful preservation of mature Cottonwood trees, to maintain the site's original character
