PSA: Ice dams and condensation issues have become prevalent in our region following continued cold temperatures after the massive snow storm. The build up of snow in the gutter that is now covered by more snow has created the perfect conditions for the ice dam to form as the snow melts from the heat of the house and then refreezes in a repetitive process (especially on the edges of your home). The ice then pushes up and out and can present as a window leak, roof leak and icicle formation. Unfortunately, this is not a roofing issue. When ice dams form, no roofing material, especially shingles and flintlastic, can hold back the up slope water pressure created from the dam. Action items include decreasing the humidity level in your home. If you have a humidistat, make sure it is set below 30%. Northern regions report that cracking a window will also help with the transfer of air. If your roof or gutter is accessible, you could try and clear it of snow with a rake from the ground, but we do not advise getting on your roof in these conditions. To attempt to prevent this issue moving forward, consider checking your insulation to make sure the heat from the house does not escape and melt the snow/ice. Northern regions also utilize heat wires on roofs where ice dams continue to cause problems. As a general rule, it is imperative to clean off your roof and clean out your gutters of any debris prior to snow and heavy rains to prevent damming.
