DIY Hail‑Damage Checklist
Where to Look What to Check For Quick Tricks
Ground‑level “clues”
• Shredded leaves or bark on plants
• Dented gutter downspouts, mailbox, grill lid, A/C condenser fins Walk the perimeter first. If softer metals (downspouts) are pitted, the roof probably is too.
Shingles • Dark, circular “bruises” where granules are missing
• Soft spots that feel spongy when you press with a chalk‑covered glove
• Exposed fiberglass mat or shiny asphalt 1. Rub a piece of sidewalk chalk across the shingle—dents pop out white.
2. Lightly press: if the spot gives, the mat is fractured.
Roof accessories • Dings on metal vents, flashing, chimney caps, skylight trim
• Cracked rubber pipe boots Lay a straight edge or credit card across a vent hood—gaps underneath reveal dents you might miss by eye.
Gutters & fascia
• Granules piling in gutters or at downspout exits
• Fresh dents/scratches on gutter faces Put a sheet of white paper under the downspout and flush with a garden hose; granules stand out on the paper.
Attic ceiling • Dark moisture rings on decking
• Sunlight peeking through new holes Check the attic during daytime—turn off the flashlight and look for pinpoints of light.
