Today, we celebrate the life & legacy of our own "Columbine Angel" Jerome D. Lacy, who was shot point blank in the face at A. Maceo Smith High School on Wednesday, April 26, 1989, 35 years ago today.

A. Maceo Smith High School, Dallas, Texas

Wednesday, April 26, 1989

Just before classes started this morning, several students were gathered in the courtyard of A. Maceo Smith when a blue Camaro pulled up with three male students from South Oak Cliff High School inside. Jerry Henderson, 18, got out of the Camaro carrying a briefcase and a .22-caliber revolver behind it. He walked up to where 16-year-old Jerome Lacy and his friends were standing. Jerry and Jerome spoke about one of Jerry’s female cousins. At some point in the conversation, Jerry said, "You all better get out of the way - I'm going to shoot him." Jerry fired off five shots at Jerome, one of the bullets hit Jerome’s lip. Jerry retreated to the Camaro and left the scene. Latoya Perkins raised the alarm by shouting Jerome was bleeding. Other students took Jerome into the school where an ambulance and the authorities were dispatched. Jerry was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and served time in the Texas state penitentiary.

Let Karen from DeSoto, Texas know we are prepared for her and the other haters.
We see you guys on our business pages the past couple of days watching us and attempting to start mess.

Question:
How the hell can someone tell you what you are allowed to do on land you purchased? We've spent the past couple weeks on our DeSoto property cleaning and planting wildflowers. Suddenly I receive a call on my business line from a local resident demanding to know what I'm doing on my land and stating for me to stay off my land, and I would not be allowed to build a funeral home in that location. Despite the property being zoned for that use and my company being issued a sign permit when we purchased the land over 15 years ago she proceeded to call me a boy (I'm 50 years old) and stated she had influence in the City of DeSoto and I would be hearing from someone with authority from the City soon. I'm a disabled veteran and my company is a certified Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business. I've been through soo much the past 20 years trying to do right in my personal life and business. The location in DeSoto was supposed to be our initial location but the community went against us and forced us to purchase a funeral home nearly two hours away, but with God's grace we made it work. We have two individuals operating a non licensed funeral home and insurance company in DeSoto working with the local church community using our business name telling the community they are affiliated with us. I'm growing tired of fighting battles with people who don't want to see me succeed. I've been quiet years, all I want to do is build a legacy for my children and grandchildren. I served in two different foreign wars for my country and this is how the community treat me. I'm also currently serving on the City of DeSoto Veteran Affairs Committee. Again, with the investments I've made over the years in this city and being a 22 year resident of DeSoto I feel just as important as any other resident.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), formally the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is an organization of U.S. war veterans who fought in wars, campaigns, and expeditions on foreign land, waters, or airspace as military service members.

The organization was established twice separately, once by James C. Putnam on September 29, 1899, in Columbus, Ohio. The VFW is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The organization was congressionally chartered in 1936 under the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at nearly 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.
