Concrete helped win World War II!
Acoustic concrete mirrors were used as early warning devices in Great Britain before the development of radars. The mirrors were designed to detect incoming enemies by listening to the engines.
With the help of the Sound Mirrors' curved surfaces, listeners equipped with then-state-of-the-art stethoscopes could focus on the sound waves captured by approaching enemy aircraft from the European mainland.
Receiver adjustments were made to ensure maximum reception, and the results were compared to those from one of the other 'ears' to determine an aircraft's height, speed, and flight path. They were most effective at distances ranging from eight to twenty-four miles!
