🦺 We are pleased to announce that we were recently honored with a Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) Bronze Safety Achievement Award in the 51,000 - 199,999 hours worked category! 🦺

To qualify for this award, companies must have an Experience Modification Rate below 1.0 and reporting recordable injury and illness rates below industry averages.

‼️ CAM received over 40 applications. Award recipients represented approximately 6,454 employees and clocked over 15,604,000 hours worked, with an average Experience Modification Rate of .68. ‼️

💭 What's one word that you think captures the ⁉️

This fun "little" mosaic was installed by team members Eric M. and Nick T. at Rock Venture's One Campus Martius - Detroit. What a cool way to honor the character of the city.

We reached substantial completion on this project in October of 2021.

We are proud to be a part of the team building the boutique Godfrey Hotel Detroit, off Michigan Ave in Corktown, right across from Nemo's.

Fun Fact – there are about 33 different types of tile on this project!

This Palladiana Terrazzo installation can be found at Rock Venture's central hub off Woodward, in Detroit.

Terrazzo became widespread during the 16th century, thanks to the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio! He is one of the most influential figures in Western architecture.

What makes Palladiana, Palladiana? Traditional terrazzo uses "smaller" aggregates - typically ranging from 1/16" to 3/8" in diameter. With Palladiana terrazzo, the size of aggregates can range from nearly 1" to 12" in diameter (and, in theory, can be even larger than that!)

Palladiana terrazzo installations tend to be more time-consuming than traditional because each of the large aggregate pieces set in place by hand, with the epoxy or terrazzo mix poured around it afterwards.

Is it flooring or is it art?!

It's ! Today we're featuring the terrazzo we installed in Birmingham at the Daxton Hotel.

One of the unique aspects of this terrazzo job is the use of brass divider strips, which provide stark contrast to the black terrazzo.

In most (industrial) terrazzo installations, divider strips, expansion joints, etc., are chosen with the goal of creating a "seamless" look.

You'll notice, here, that the divider strips compliment the metal railing along with the art in the background. They were likely chosen for how they accentuate the floor, not how they blend into it!

We'd have to say the terrazzo is flooring AND it's art!

Completed in 2021 for Clark Construction Company.

- Black is one of the two hardest colors of terrazzo to finish.

It's ☝ Featuring this daunting, 4" x 10" gauged porcelain tile panel installation at the Detroit Pistons Performance Center. 🏀

📏 These panels were cut down from their original 5" x 10" size. At 6mm thick, this material weighs 2.88 lbs a SF.... which is 115.2 lbs per panel that we installed... and that's without any mortar!

📏 According to the American National Standards Institute, any piece of tile with one side measuring 15" or greater is considered "large profile."

📏 Large profile tile is chosen by owners and designers for its clean, minimalistic look (think, less grout lines).

⏰ To emphasize how much design tastes have changed: in 1999/2000 we were installing 2' by 2' tile at the Detroit Metro Airport, and that was on the cutting-edge of what was considered "large."

📏 Designers would say advanced manufacturing technology and processes are to “thank,” installers might say to “blame” for these new design possibilities and trends. Where do you think we'll be in another 20 years? 🤔

Here are some hints:

📗The building where you can find this mosaic was built in 1857, and is considered the oldest standing building on campus.

📗This building serves as the official residence for the president of the university.

📗The iconic Beaumont Tower is depicted by the hand-crafted, Detroit-based tile.

This mosaic resides in the historic Alice B. Cowles house, located at ......

Foreman Eric Manzaroli expertly installed this mosaic as a part of our Cowles House renovation work for The Christman Company in 2020. Eric has been with us for ✨15 ✨ years this August. We are thankful for his hard work, thoughtfulness, and leadership in the field!
