The student pilot's improper decision to turn off the runway while the airplane was moving too fast after landing, which resulted in a runway excursion and impact with a taxiway sign.

On this day in aviation history; August 17th, 1946, First Sergeant Lawrence Lambert became the first person in the United States to be ejected from an aircraft in flight.

While conducting the first U.S. manned test of an ejection seat while flying a USAF P-61. Lambert ejected at 300mph at an altitude of 6,000 feet. “He was fired out of the cockpit at approximately 60 feet per second. A low velocity, but instantaneous acceleration produced a high load on the pilot at approximately 12 to 14 Gs during the initial explosive detonation

The tail of his Black Widow twin boom aircraft... was cleared by only 20 feet.
