Constraint is the new competitive advantage.

When compute and energy are cheap, everyone can chase spectacle. When resources tighten, only disciplined engineering scales.

We just published a new piece on what the “Age of Constraint” means for physical AI, and why the future belongs to modular systems that are testable, measurable, and deployable, not monolithic moonshots.

Constraint is becoming the defining force in AI and robotics. Compute, energy, supply chains, and talent are tightening, and the era of “just scale it” is colliding with reality. This essay argues we have to shift from gluttony to ROI: build production-grade stacks, optimize across training and ...

We asked our team one simple question
“What got you excited about robots?”

We’re pausing our usual tech focused content to share something a little more human.
Meet the people behind the robots at Trossen Robotics and hear what pulled them into this work.

How quickly can your team start doing real work?

As a Physical AI partner, Trossen Robotics builds systems designed to help teams start working sooner and keep moving as projects scale beyond the lab.

Most robotics projects don’t slow down because of ideas or ambition.
They slow down during setup.

When hardware is simple to assemble and backed by responsive support from US-based robotics engineers, teams can move from delivery to data collection in weeks instead of months.

That early momentum matters.
It’s the difference between waiting and learning.

We are honored to see Trossen Robotics recognized during CES as Intel unveils its new Panther Lake CPUs.

As a key Physical AI hardware provider, being acknowledged alongside Intel’s world-class partners is a meaningful moment for our team. In addition to the public recognition, we are proud to serve as an early test partner, evaluating Panther Lake ahead of launch in Physical AI workloads.

During testing, we saw excellent performance gains over previous-generation mobile CPUs. We are also impressed to see the integrated GPU successfully run inference on the models provided in the openpi framework.

As Physical AI continues to advance, the importance of reliable hardware platforms and real-world validation becomes even more critical. We are grateful to be part of an ecosystem focused on turning cutting-edge compute into systems that operate outside the lab and scale in the real world.

Congratulations to Intel on the Panther Lake launch, and thank you for recognizing the partners building alongside you.

The future is bright at Trossen Robotics, so we decided to celebrate with a company-wide lamp building challenge.

Each participant was given $1,000 in Trossen Bucks to bid on old R&D parts at a scrap auction. Once the auction wrapped, everyone had 45 days to turn their winnings into a working lamp. The only rule was that it had to light up.

As expected, many builds came together the night before the deadline, but every single team delivered something unique. The range of creativity was impressive, and one lamp in particular was so bright that sunglasses were genuinely required.

Projects like this are a fun reminder that creativity and engineering go hand in hand. Sometimes the best ideas come from leftover parts, a loose brief, and a ticking clock.

Robotics success depends on more than shipping hardware. Many researchers adopting OpenPi needed guidance, documentation, and clarity on what is realistically achievable. Out of the box results are rare because performance is shaped by training data, task complexity, and environmental variation. The limiting factor is almost never the arm itself but the volume and quality of data needed to train modern models.

The industry experiences the same hype cycles seen in other scientific fields. Breakthrough research creates excitement, yet real world progress takes time. Most customers today are researchers and early stage teams building data pipelines and experimenting with emerging methods. These are the groups pushing the field forward, and supporting them requires pragmatism and collaboration rather than speculation.

We’ve published a new technical walkthrough showing how to train and deploy Pi-0 and Pi-0.5 ML models using the OpenPi framework, now integrated with Trossen AI arms.

This video covers the full workflow, including data collection, model training and configuration, key parameters for fine-tuning, and running trained policies. We also discuss practical considerations such as batch size selection, adapter-based fine-tuning, inference settings, and the current limitations when working with small or task-specific datasets.

OpenPi provides a flexible foundation for imitation learning and robot policy training, and this walkthrough is designed to help researchers and developers move from data collection to deployment more efficiently.

As machine learning tools rapidly evolve, robotics research needs data pipelines that keep pace. This explains how shifting from custom systems to widely adopted frameworks has dramatically improved the way researchers work. Moving from ROS based data collection to newer platforms like Hugging Face and the Bot framework allowed tighter integration with action chunking, transformers, diffusion policies, and the tools researchers already rely on.

By building our hardware directly into these pipelines, teams can train models faster, create benchmarks with less effort, and avoid rebuilding entire ML stacks. The result is more time spent on innovation and far less on integration.

Humanoids are everywhere in the news, but the research community is telling a different story. In this discussion, we talk about why humanoid form factors are not what customers are asking for and why the real momentum is in 6-DOF and emerging 7-DOF torso-based systems.

The complexity of humanoid hands, legs, and full-body control adds an enormous burden to machine learning models, especially when the core challenge of large scale data collection still remains unsolved.

Rather than chasing speculative shapes, we focus on the real problem the field needs to address. No model succeeds without massive, high quality datasets and this mirrors why technologies like ChatGPT took off so quickly. When the data exists, innovation accelerates. This episode breaks down where robotics is truly headed and what researchers are prioritizing today.

Defining Success Criteria

Not every demonstration will succeed, and low quality data can negatively impact model performance. This clip explains why defining clear success criteria is essential for avoiding distribution shift and keeping your dataset aligned with real world behavior. Automated checks for failed runs can help identify issues early, and storing those failures provides valuable insight into system limits and edge cases. Careful evaluation of both successful and unsuccessful episodes strengthens the overall quality of your training data.
