Does Plumas County have the richest unworked gold deposits in California? Being on the northern end of the Motherlode it was largely passed over compared to other counties by the initial wave of gold seekers. It's ruggedness remained an obstacle for later prospectors too but it's gold deposits proved impressively rich and widespread.

La Porte alone, one of the more accessible parts of the county produced nearly 3 million ounces. Today, the creeks and rivers of Plumas County hold a great opportunities for the modern prospector as they have been enriched for millennia by gold-quartz veins and ancient river channels. The county remains one of the least populated relative to its size and full of potential for finding a lot more gold.

Storms have put prospecting on hold for a bit but it will be interesting to get out again later this year. I hope everyone is safe, property damage is minimal to none, and that you are able to get prospecting once the weather clears.

Flood gold deposits can be very rich and this year is bringing more new gold than any winter in decades.

A claim that I think will benefit the most is on Onion Valley Creek which cuts right through a rich ancient riverbed and multiple hardrock deposits. The claim is in the historic La Porte Mining District, has direct access, and about a 1/2 mile of creek. It's definitely a special spot. Gold exploration is an interesting line of work in more than a few ways. One of which I've been thinking about is how we still rely on 100+ year old books for a lot of work.

The book I've probably taken off the shelf most often is by the late, great Swedish born geologist Waldemar Lindgren. The Tertiary Gravels of the Sierra Nevada, published in 1911, is an indispensable resource for anyone mining these deposits and will make you appreciate how much gold is left in them.

As a prospector you work hard for the gold you find and deserve to get the best price possible for it. What you mine is truly rare not just because it's gold. Placer gold -fines, flakes, and nuggets- makes up just a fraction of gold production and has a special premium if sold the right way.
