Salt quits when it gets really cold. Sand doesn't. 🧊

Meet our traction sand: coarse, gritty arena sand from our pit in Driggs, with small stones mixed in so it bites into ice and packed snow. Plain rock salt slows way down below about 15°F, and Teton Valley mornings often get colder than that. Sand doesn't have to melt anything to work.

Meet 3/4" road base (aka 3/4" minus): crushed rock from our pit in Driggs, from 3/4" pieces all the way down to sand and fines. The sharp edges lock together, the fines fill the gaps, and once it's compacted it packs down firm, sheds water and holds up to heavy loads.

Darby Pit shares its name with a rock layer about 370 million years old. Sound on! 🔊

In 1918, geologists named it the Darby Formation, after Darby Canyon in the Tetons. In the last Ice Age, a glacier filled that canyon, and its meltwater carried boulders, cobbles and gravel out across the valley floor. That's the ground Darby Pit digs today.

Fun fact: T. rex lived closer to our time than to the Darby layer. 🦖

Take a close look at the gray limestone pebbles in your gravel. Some may still hold fossils from that ancient sea: sea lily stems, corals and shells.

A near-record El Niño is building this winter. Does that mean an easy winter for Teton Valley? Sound on! 🔊

We checked more than a century of local snow records. 4 of the 7 strong El Niño winters since 1950 were normal or snowier, and 1982–83, one of the strongest El Niños on record, brought 35 plow days at Alta (days with 2+ inches of new snow).

El Niño tilts the odds a little. It doesn't cancel winter. Plan for a normal one: about 16 plow days in Driggs, 26 up at Alta.
