Concrete 101: Tuesday Series | #1
What Is Concrete?
Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in the world, but many people do not realize what it is actually made of.
Concrete is a mixture of several key components:
Cement
Cement acts like the glue. When mixed with water, it starts a chemical reaction that helps bind everything together.
Water
Water activates the cement and helps the mixture become workable. The right amount of water is very important because too much water can weaken the concrete.
Fine Aggregate
This is usually sand. It helps fill the smaller spaces in the mix and contributes to the overall strength and finish.
Coarse Aggregate
This is usually rock or gravel. It makes up a large portion of the concrete and gives the mix volume, strength, and stability.
Admixtures
These are optional ingredients added to improve certain properties, such as workability, set time, strength development, or performance in hot and cold weather.
When these materials are properly proportioned, placed, finished, and cured, they create a strong and durable material used for driveways, patios, sidewalks, foundations, slabs, parking lots, and many other projects.
The quality of concrete depends on more than just the material itself. Good concrete starts with the right mix, proper preparation, skilled placement, and proper curing.
