I'm seeing lots of ads for emf shields and measuring instruments. On the shields, in my professional opinion, they are a waste of money. If you think you have a problem, there's no harm in getting a meter and making measurements. But don't get too excited about any readings you get, since I don't believe there is any credible scientific proof that magnetic fields actually cause real physical harm. But if you believe it does, that's a legitimate concern. So, don't waste your money on emf shields. If you think you have a problem there are practical ways of reducing levels or exposure.

Over my many years of experience in the consulting business, I have encountered many different situations. One was the case of a magnetic mobile home. This home was located in southeastern NC in a rural area. The homeowner was complaining about his TV having strange colors. It sounded familiar. Back in my younger days, working in my hometown radio and TV repair shop, my boss, Harold Rufty, demonstrated how he would demagnetize a TV to correct this problem. He used something called a degaussing coil, waving it in front of the screen and slowly drawing it away, turning it at a right angle to the screen before turning off the coil. It always worded.

After doing some preliminary investigation at the home, I got out my degaussing coil and treated the TV. It briefly cleared up the colors, but soon went back to the color splotches on the screen.

I suspected there was a bigger problem. I did some EMF readings and found that the walls of the mobile home had a high magnetic field. A few weeks back they had experienced a lightning strike to their satellite dish outside. Apparently the large magnetic field surge of the lightning had magnetized the steel frame of the mobile home. I demagnetized the walls near the TV and treated the TV again. The problem cleared up again.

I think, over time, the problem gradually cleared up. But my experience from my work with Harold was a key to solving the problem. Thanks Harold.

I'm in the process of relocating my office "again." After a "huge" tree limb crushed my garage and car inside, we began the process of rebuilding. The room addition on the back of the garage had originally been a laundry room for the original owners. It became my woodworking shop over the years. I am converting the shop into an office and am moving from my office nearby soon. It's a little smaller than where I am now, but it's just fine. Also, Mr. Carson (our new rescue) will be able to hang out with me at the office. As the years have gone by, my commute to work has gotten shorter and shorter. Dreading moving again, but looking forward to the new digs. Phone number and email will stay the same, but the mailing address will change.

I'm remembering a time when I got a contact with a woman who suspected she had an EMF problem in her condominium. She said her feet got hot when she walked in a particular part of her home. I packed up my equipment and when to the home. I took some magnetic field measurements and, low and behold, she did have elevated magnetic fields in one part of the home. More investigation was needed. I looked in the crawl space. There was a water pipe running directly under the area of concern. I put a clamp on ammeter on the pipe and measured more than one amp on the pipe. That is not normal. I contacted the local electric utility company about this. The homes were supplied with electricity by an underground distribution system. As I recall, the utility found that there was a corroded concentric neutral on the primary distribution cables and made repairs. I think the woman had an EMF meter and had made measurements herself. I firmly believe she convinced herself of the problem and her hot feet. I never heard back from her on this.

I had a friend of mine posting about being exposed to EMF. I used to be in charge of helping customers of Duke Power with such inquiries. I remember being contacted about a farm near Mooresville, NC. The owner, a very famous racecar driver (will not use his name) owned a chicken farm nearby and had a problem with very ugly chickens (loss of feathers) and was concerned about the nearby transmission line near his chicken houses. I packed up my equipment and went to the farm. I didn't measure any significant magnetic fields but did find an induced voltage on the metal roof. I advised them on how to ground the roofing to decrease those levels. Never heard back on this until years later. I heard indirectly that they traced the problem back to a particular rooster. Not an EMF problem. I have more stories that I will post.

Just finished a 3 week online training program in the NESC for Hawaiian Electric. It's interesting that the state of Hawaii still is requiring the use of the 2002 Edition of the NESC. But we covered some of the updates that they might still be able to use. Sure wish we could have done this live.

Old wiring and interference from other devices can slow your DSL connection to a crawl. Spending a bit of time and money to improve your wiring can make a huge difference.
