When you’re a small business, your first “CRM” might honestly be a spreadsheet.

That’s fine.

What matters is knowing:

Who reached out?
When did you respond?
What are they interested in?
Who needs a follow-up?
What happened next?

A surprising amount of potential business gets lost simply because someone meant to follow up…and forgot.

Use whatever system you’ll actually keep updated. You can make it fancy later.

One thing I love the most about having a small business is the freedom to collaborate with amazing women business owners. Today I got to meet two incredible ladies and artists who did a project in my home.

Thank you both so much for transforming this space and making it feel like home.

If you’re starting a business, don’t wait until you’re “big enough” to start collecting customer emails.

Social platforms are useful, but you don’t control the algorithm - or whether your audience sees your next post.

An email list gives you a direct way to stay in touch with people who already know your business.

Start simple. Ask customers if they’d like updates, offers, helpful information, or reminders.

Ten relevant email addresses are more useful than a giant list of people who don’t care.

Anyone starting a new business is doing it for one reason (well other than money!): to do the thing they love or are good at, without restrictions or burdens from another party (aka boss).

Time and again, we also hear the same thing: I'm spending so much of my time doing "x" instead of with clients (or, insert some variant!)

đź“© Following up with inquiries.
đź“… Updating your schedule.
âś… Posting on social media or keeping your Google profile up-to-date
🖥️ Creating (and managing!) a website.......(insert more ad nauseum!)

The better your business does, the more of the "other" things on your plate. If the behind-the-scenes work is starting to take you away from customers, that’s usually a pretty good sign that your business is ready for some support.

Start thinking about what this looks like when you start seeing the warning signs (answering emails on the weekends, staying up until midnight or the dreaded "honey, I just need one more minute before we leave for our dinner-date!". Asking for help isn't defeat; it's how you stay happy, healthy (and married) to keep your business growing, clients happy....and that money rolling in. 🤣

When you’re starting out, it’s tempting to try a little bit of everything and hope something works.

But knowing where your customers actually came from tells you where your time and money are worth spending.

Google search? A referral? Instagram? A local Facebook group? Someone saw your truck?

Start asking. Keep track.

You don’t need sophisticated analytics on day one. You just need enough information to stop guessing about what’s working.

Friction is anything that makes your day harder than it needs to be.

Maybe customers can't find the information they need.

Maybe you're copying the same email over and over.

Maybe you're entering the same information into three different places.

None of these feel like major problems.

Until they happen every single day.

Small improvements remove friction.
And small improvements add up.

It's tempting to create processes that work for today.

But good systems should still work when:
- you have twice as many customers
- you're busier than expected
- someone else joins the team

Thinking a little further ahead now can save you from rebuilding everything later.

Business isn't just about making decisions.

It's about noticing patterns.

Are customers asking for a service you don't offer?

Are they getting stuck at the same point?

Do the same tasks keep taking longer than expected?

Those aren't random events.

They're clues about what your business needs next.

Sometimes your biggest opportunity is hiding in your everyday frustrations.

Getting a new customer is exciting.

But every "yes" also means:
- another conversation to keep track of
- another project to manage
- another invoice to send
- another relationship to maintain

Growth isn't just about getting more customers.

It's about making sure you can support the ones you already have.

The businesses that grow sustainably don't just celebrate new work - they prepare for it.

Sometimes progress looks like:

- answering fewer repetitive questions
- finding information faster
- spending less time on admin
- finally having a process that works

Those wins don't always show up on a sales report.

But they make every part of your business run better.

Don't overlook the improvements that make tomorrow easier than today.
