We believe that infrastructure doesn’t have to be massive to be meaningful. Often, it’s the "small" upgrades like modernized curb inlets, improved neighborhood drainage, and permeable surfaces that create the biggest shift in daily life.

“100-year storm” is one of the most misunderstood terms in engineering.

It sounds like something that only happens once every century…
but that’s not what it means.

A “100-year storm” actually means there’s a 1% chance of it happening in any given year.
That’s it. No waiting 100 years.

And here’s where it gets real:

If your property is in a 1% floodplain, there’s about a 26% chance it will flood during a 30-year mortgage.
That’s not rare, that’s a real risk over time.

This is why engineers are moving away from the term altogether.
You’ll hear clearer language like:
• 1% storm
• Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP)
• Annual Chance of Exceedance (ACE)

Different terms — same idea: understanding the true probability of flooding.

Not all culverts are created equal.

At first glance, a culvert seems simple — it just moves water under a road.
But in reality? There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface.

The “right” culvert depends on more than just size. Engineers have to consider:
• How much water is actually flowing through
• How high water is allowed to rise (headwater)
• The height and stability of the roadway
• Soil and foundation conditions
• Material performance over time (concrete, HDPE, steel)
• Proper inlet and outlet protection

Get it wrong, and the consequences show up fast:
Undersized → flooding, erosion, road damage
Oversized → unnecessary costs and potential downstream issues
