The Mysterious Midwater Society: An international research team, including two researchers from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, discovered 31 new marine species over two weeks off the coast of Brazil.

Senior research scientists John Burns and David Fields worked aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute's research vessel Falkor (too). They used novel technologies to explore the midwater — the space between the sunlit layer and the seafloor — Earth’s largest and least explored habitable ecosystem.

Want to hear what it was like working on a state-of-the-art research vessel in the South Atlantic Ocean, and how a jar of turmeric became an unexpected hero?

From research vessel to scholar-ship 🎓🚢

We are thrilled to celebrate the recipient of this year’s Boothbay Region High School Bigelow Laboratory Scholarship: Matthew Little!

For a budding scientist who’s still in high school, he is already making big waves. Matthew completed our Keller BLOOM program in 2025, and he is part of the Boothbay Region Climate Action Team, drama club, and track and field team.

Next year, he plans to study marine science at the University of New England.

Congratulations, Matthew! Even though you’re studying tiny marine life in this snap from last summer, we want you to know that we see only big accomplishments in your future.

Good luck to all the 2026 BRHS graduates as they begin their next adventures!

Dock to Doc: World Ocean Day proved a fitting capstone to University of Maine PhD student Sydney Greenlee’s academic studies at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.

On Monday, Sydney successfully defended her dissertation in our forum, representing the culmination of six years of hard work investigating harmful algal blooms along the coast of Maine.

But completing her PhD program only represents one portion of her time at Bigelow Laboratory. Sydney was a 2018 REU intern, and she participated in both the Jan Plan program at Colby College and Sea Change Semester.

Congratulations to Sydney and fellow PhD recipients Samuel Tan, Kyle Oliveira, Rene Francolini, Shane Farrell, and Dara Yiu who completed their doctorate programs at our institution through the Maine-eDNA program! We’re excited to see these freshly minted docs around the docks of marine science institutions in the future.

Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊

When people think about the ocean, words that often come to mind include large, deep, powerful, salty, and inspirational. Here at , the word that’s top of mind is hopeful.

To celebrate this deep sense of promise, we asked several of our research interns and our resident assistant what the ocean means to them. Their responses reminded us that the future of marine science is bright and beautiful.

This World Ocean Day, all new and increased gifts to Bigelow Laboratory will be matched. Please stand with us — and the ocean we study — as we advance world-class science to improve the future.

The Underwater Undead: starring zombie sea cucumbers 🎬🧟

A recent study, featuring Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Senior Research Scientist Rachel Sipler and led by researchers at Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador, documented the continued survival of amputated sea cucumber tissue for more than three years in natural seawater.

This is the first known report of severed tissue showing long-term survival and growth outside a highly controlled, sterile environment.

While it may sound like the plot of a sci-fi movie, the discovery could offer important insights into regenerative biology and help inform future biomedical breakthroughs.

Turning Seaweed into Art 🌿

Today, Bigelow Laboratory’s National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota (NCMA) is celebrating National Seaweed Day by collecting wild seaweeds and transforming them into beautiful pressed specimens. From delicate reds to towering kelps, seaweeds are some of the ocean’s most fascinating and important organisms.

Want to learn more about the amazing world of algae? Dive into the MARIA project’s Algae 101 webpage to explore algae basics, discover different groups, and uncover the incredible potential of algae for blue economy innovation and sustainable solutions.

Hotel Californica: Check out (any time you like) this photo of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Senior Research Scientist José Fernández-Robledo holding a specimen of Aplysia californica, a marine sea slug used as a model to study the cellular and molecular basis of learning, memory, and behavior.

José presented recently at the workshop “Successes and Challenges in Symbiotic Invertebrate Cell Culture.” The event was hosted at University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, sponsored by the Moore Foundation.

The workshop identified best practices for establishing invertebrate cell lines. José’s presentation focused on the challenges facing bivalve mollusks.

Make no bones about it: sharing our science is essential to our work. Thank you, José, for your contributions to this workshop.

Fawning over FAUNA: In March, a group of Colby College students, faculty, and staff visited Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences's campus for a creative retreat. The workshop centered scientific research through creative lenses, encouraging students to imagine marine organisms in new ways. The group toured our campus, looked at zooplankton and marine life under microscopes, and spent a few hours creating together.

Fast forward to May and the pressed seaweed, poetry, sketches, photos, and block prints inspired by this visit are featured in the spring 2026 edition of FAUNA, the college’s environmental humanities, literary, and art magazine. If you look closely, you might also spot a few familiar faces including that of Nicole Lin, a 2025 alum of Bigelow Laboratory’s Sea Change Semester!
