14 gauge steel works well for most home uses like garages and carports. It can handle typical weather, such as wind and snow, if properly supported.

Even though 12 gauge steel is more expensive, you might need it in some cases. For areas with extreme weather, stronger framing is necessary. Some states even mandate 12 gauge steel for specific uses, so make sure to check your local building codes.
