Mistaken identity? Go figure.

Here’s a little lab challenge from Geotechnics:

Three buckets arrive at the lab, labeled “rocks,” “dirt,” and “rocks and dirt.” The catch? None of the labels is correct. You can look at just one sample from just one bucket. Can you figure out how to correctly label all three?

We love a good testing challenge—and the satisfaction of getting the data right.

Think you’ve got the answer? Stay tuned for the solution in our next postcard.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake in western Colombia has caused widespread damage, including collapsed buildings, damaged hospitals and disrupted transportation.

For geotechnical and structural engineers, the aftermath highlights an important lesson: seismic resilience starts long before the shaking begins. Building condition, structural detailing, site conditions and seismic evaluation all play a critical role in how communities withstand major earthquakes.

As rescue and assessment efforts continue, the event is another reminder of the importance of understanding ground conditions, evaluating vulnerable structures and designing for the forces that can come without warning.

Some things are harder to crack than others.

When an old Ebonite bowling ball showed up in the Geotechnics lab, we couldn’t resist putting it to the test. How much pressure would it take to crack? What would happen? And how many of us could actually watch the process?

That same curiosity and collaboration goes into every testing challenge we tackle. If you have a tough one, send it our way.

Not every critical test happens where you can see it.

At Geotechnics, we combine specialized testing with experienced professionals to help ensure geosynthetic liner systems perform as intended, giving clients confidence that their projects are built on quality from the start.

When integrity matters, put Geotechnics to the test.

The best engineers never stop learning.

At Geotechnics, every project is an opportunity to ask better questions, explore new solutions, and refine the way we test. That commitment to continuous learning has helped us become a trusted partner for geotechnical and geosynthetic testing for decades.

Innovation isn't always about reinventing the process—sometimes it's about improving it, one test, one project, and one lesson at a time.

Because the more we learn, the better we serve our clients.

Small warning signs can point to much bigger problems.

A recent road collapse in Rize, Turkey, highlights the importance of proper excavation support and continuous monitoring during urban construction. As foundation excavation progressed beside an existing roadway, ground movement and retaining wall failure led to the collapse of part of the road, damaged a gas pipeline, and prompted the evacuation of nearby residents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Excavation changes the balance of forces in the ground. Without adequate temporary support, drainage, and monitoring, visible cracks, settlement, or retaining wall movement can quickly escalate into infrastructure failures that impact surrounding roads, utilities, and buildings.

Geotechnical engineering plays a critical role in identifying and managing these risks—helping keep construction projects, infrastructure, and communities safe.

Great engineering doesn't just solve today's challenges—it anticipates tomorrow's demands.

The original Woodrow Wilson Bridge was designed to carry 75,000 vehicles a day. By 1999, it was handling nearly 200,000 daily crossings, making replacement essential.

The solution wasn't simply to build a bigger bridge. Engineers designed twin six-lane drawbridges with higher navigation clearance, improving both traffic flow and river navigation while creating infrastructure built for decades of future growth.

At Geotechnics, we know that every successful infrastructure project begins with a strong foundation. Through reliable geotechnical testing and engineering expertise, we help clients build with confidence for the future.

Every project comes with unique challenges—and sometimes the solution requires thinking beyond standard testing methods.

When a client needed to determine the ideal conveyor belt angle for transporting materials with varying moisture contents, the Geotechnics team designed a custom test. By measuring how different materials behaved at different angles and moisture levels, we identified the optimal "sticking point" to help prevent material from sliding backward during transport.

Innovation in geotechnical engineering isn't just about following standards—it's about developing practical solutions to real-world problems.

Have a challenge that needs testing? Put Geotechnics to the test.
