In 2005, the Taum Sauk Reservoir breach released a billion gallons of water into the valley below in just 12 minutes. When the reservoir was rebuilt, the design took a different approach, replacing the original rock-fill design with roller-compacted concrete built on bedrock.

When retaining walls fail, the consequences can extend far beyond the construction site.

A retaining wall collapse at a construction site in Belgrade, Serbia, caused part of a neighboring parking area—and a parked car—to fall into the excavation. Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution, and authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the failure.

The incident highlights the importance of proper excavation support, site monitoring and understanding how ground movement can affect surrounding structures and infrastructure.

In western Alaska, rising temperatures are weakening the frozen ground that has long supported homes, roads, utilities and other critical infrastructure. As permafrost thaws, soils can become softer and more compressible, leading to settlement, cracking, drainage changes and erosion.

For geotechnical engineers, the question is becoming bigger than how do we rebuild? It’s where can we safely and sustainably rebuild?

From elevated foundations and insulation to improved drainage, thermosiphons and long-term ground monitoring, engineering solutions may help in some locations. In others, particularly vulnerable coastal communities, relocation may be the safer path.

The lesson is clear: when ground conditions are changing, infrastructure design has to change with them.

Mistaken identity? Go figure.

Here’s a little lab challenge from Geotechnics:

Three buckets arrive at the lab, labeled “rocks,” “dirt,” and “rocks and dirt.” The catch? None of the labels is correct. You can look at just one sample from just one bucket. Can you figure out how to correctly label all three?
