Do you need special zoning approval to build an ADU?

In many cases, no. 👀

Massachusetts now allows certain ADUs “by right,” meaning homeowners may not need a special permit if the project meets state and local requirements.

Rhode Island also requires municipalities to permit ADUs under certain conditions, although site plans, setbacks, utilities, and code compliance may still apply.

Every property is different, but ADUs are becoming more accessible than ever across RI & MA.
