Mendenhall Fuel, Inc.

Mendenhall Fuel, Inc. Mendenhall Fuel is a family owned and operated fuel oil company serving eastern Long Island since 1934 C.L. In 1940, C.L.

(Bus) Mendenhall went into the fuel business in East Quogue in 1934 with an old pick-up truck and a 200-gallon tank. Mendenhall took on a partner, his wife Alice, who started to help with the bookkeeping and stayed with the phone at home to take orders while her husband was out on the road. Mendenhall had no sooner acquired a replacement for the pick-up, and a new rig with a big 750 gallon tank wh

en he was called for service in World War II. In 1949, the Mendenhalls purchased a home and property on Montauk Highway where the business is still located today. The reason for the move was to have the space to install Mendenhall’s first fuel oil storage tanks. There were two of them, each holding 15,000 gallons. It was considered a big step at the time to have your own storage facility for bulk delivery. In March of 1968, when son Tom, returned home from a tour of duty in the Army, including nearly a year in Vietnam, he went full-time into the fuel business. The company had by then become a corporation with a complete burner service and installation department. Deliveries were on the automatic system and the fleet of trucks were all equipped with two-way radios. In the early 1970's Tom took over the business and continued the traditions his father started until 2021 when his daughter Rebecca took over.

PSA: While there may not be an explicitly named "Driveway Plowing Act" in New York State law, there are legal and safety requirements that effectively mandate keeping your driveway accessible for fuel deliveries. Property owners in New York are legally responsible for maintaining their premises in a safe condition for visitors, including business invitees like oil drivers. If a delivery cannot be made safely due to snow or ice, the driver/company has the right to refuse the delivery.

Property Maintenance Code: The Property Maintenance Code of New York State requires that driveways and walkways be "maintained free from hazardous conditions".

Access Guidelines: To ensure delivery, a path at least one foot wide should be cleared from the driveway to the fill pipe. Delivery trucks often require a cleared width of approximately 10 feet for the driveway, with wider spaces for maneuvering.

Delivery Restrictions (Oct 15 - Apr 15): During the heating season, it is the consumer's responsibility to provide a safe, salted, or sanded, and cleared walking path to the fill area.

Be decent and help keep drivers safe, plow driveways and shovel a walkway to your fill.
