I recently got to check in on an installation I completed two years back on the coast of Massachusetts.

These sculptures started brewing four years ago when I joined the team of sonrisaracing an XP 44, for the Newport-Bermuda race in ‘22. Over four years, a lot of laughs, some “oh sh!t” moments and over 3,500 ocean miles the crew has gotten to be thick as thieves.

I knew pretty early on that I wanted to give the owners a piece of appreciation and one of them being an artist in her own right meant we got to collaborate. I designed these wind driven sculptures and prefabbed as much as I could in the shop, then loaded up the truck and headed North. In between practice races we sourced stones off the shoreline and I fabricated cradles for each of the counterweights. Then with some help from our navigator, we poured concrete bases and set the uprights.

Prior to the Newport Bermuda Race this year I got to visit “The Rudders” as they’ve been aptly named and even caught one of them in action. Now the only problem is waiting two more years before it’s time to aim for the Gulf Stream again.

Had to get QC off the couch and out in the field to check things over before the new stage for Annapolis Maritime Museum had its official naming ceremony. Fortunately everything was up to s***f and there wasn’t a single squirrel or rabbit nearby.

See the stage in action as tonight kicks off the Thursday night summer concert series for Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park in Eastport!

Swipe to see what parallel parking a 32’ boat and trailer on a snowy, muddy lawn looks like; as well as a beautifully executed move by known in the trades as the dueling banjos.

Delivering and installing through February weather was about as wet and cold as expected, but we were lucky to have some decent days to work in. Andrew and Mark, of helped make building out the extension of the stage platform a breeze.

After completing some finishing touches, including solar powered nav lights, the new stage at was ready for a summer of tunes.

Having a level surface to walk on and work from certainly felt like a luxury after all the time climbing and crawling around the bilge.

After installing the sole boards, I got to have some fun with the washboards and establishing the lines that would define the hull. I took inspiration from the classic workboats of old, with steep camber across their decks. Depending on the era and the builder, there are moments where form took slightly more precedence over function. There are always tradeoffs; a steep deck will be harder to stand on, but it will shed water better, plus, it just looks good. Those decisions made by builders over the years were likely shaped by times when they had the opportunity to flex their creative skills and craftsmanship over their ability to build for utility.

At this point I had run out of workable weather to be able to complete fiberglassing and painting the washboards I had built out of marine plywood. and I have exchanged a mix of work and favors over the years and Keith graciously lent me a big triple axle trailer and made some space in his (heated and well lit) shop so I could get the boat there and finished up. After a couple weeks getting spoiled by a climate controlled shop in the middle of January and with the help of some extra hands and tips from the fellas at , we had a hull that looks so slick it was a real shame to not be taking it straight to the boat ramp.

Fighting the good fight against some shorn off bolts on this antique Gray Marine manifold. Another local shop was fortunate to find this one to replace the original that had developed some cracks in it that weren’t repairable. It’s always amazing what a little heat and an impact (and in one bolt’s case, soaking overnight in a PB Blaster bath) will do on decades of rust. All of these bolts were snapped off flush with the manifold, so I welded a washer to them first and then a nut on top before hitting them with the ugga dugga.

Bigger jobs=bigger tools. It has been an action packed month in the shop knocking out some smaller projects, while gearing up for and starting some bigger ones. I thought about buying a gantry, but I couldn’t find one with the qualities I wanted and the build quality I need. So I knocked the rust off of my stick welding skills and cranked this bad boy out.
