It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week. Here are 7 safety tips to keep you & those working on the roads safe:
1. Pay attention to signs in advance of a road construction project.
2. Stay alert & minimize distractions.
3. Drive the posted speed limits in work zones.
4. Watch for stopped or slowing traffic.
5. Keep an eye out for construction workers.
6. Use extra caution at night.
7. Watch for detours & lane diversions.
Most states have laws regarding work zones. Penalties for speeding in these areas are double that of normal penalties–so, be safe & drive like you work there.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Be safe. Don’t text & drive. Even if you use hands-free devices you can still miss important visual & audio cues needed to avoid a crash. Use your cell phone for emergency situations only. If you do have an emergency & need to make a call, pull over safely to the shoulder of the road. Don’t forget to carry a roadside safety kit: bit.ly/2uIknbp

It’s the first day of spring! We hope you’re enjoying good weather. However, we realize this time of year can also bring major flooding. Do you know what to do if you encounter a flooded road? Here are several tips that could help save your life:
• Check for road closures.
• Don't drive around barricades.
• Don’t drive through flowing water. 6” of water can knock someone down. 12” can sweep a car away.
• Choose alternate routes. Rushing water erodes roads & bridges making them unsafe.
• If you get stuck in still floodwaters, leave your car to seek higher ground.
• If you are trapped in moving floodwaters, wait for help.
• Carry a roadside safety kit, one with a variety of products to help you be seen in the event of an emergency. Learn more here: bit.ly/2uIknbp

It’s a great day to “chill out” in front of a fire, but don’t forget to think about safety. Protect your family & your home with these 10 fireplace safety tips:
1. Be certain the damper or flue is open before starting a fire.
2. Use dry, well-aged wood & smaller fires to prevent chimney cracking & soot buildup.
3. Clean out ashes from previous fires to help airflow & prevent smoke.
4. Have your chimney checked annually & make sure the chimney cap is secure.
5. Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything that is potentially flammable.
6. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended.
7. Minimize your child's chance of burns by using a secure screen.
8. Keep fireplace tools out of child's reach.
