South Street Greenhouse Sustainable year-round vegetables for Eastport Maine and beyond

We operate a solar heated, super-insulated, polycarbonate glazed, 24X72' greenhouse in the small city of Eastport Maine as part of a vibrant local food movement offering healthy non-GMO, petro-chemical and pesticide free vegetables and eggs. Winter production includes variety salad mixes and greens, with shoulder and summer season expanding to warm weather and traditional northern vegetable production.

This week the tomatoes finally froze, but at the first touch of cold inside, the dying plants exposed this beauty. It was pink at the time, but today it became two very delicious BLTs, so summer is officially over. We now have greens coming in, and the refrigerator will again be stocked. Drop by and anticipate spring.

The South Street Greenhouse is a mess these days. In the first bitter cold days after Christmas we lost all of our beautiful tomatoes. The basil, peppers, artichokes and the nasturtiums also gave up the ghost, and almost every day a different water pipe or hose has frozen and burst, either with a deluge or a spray. The greens seem to be holding on, though some around the perimeter have wilted, but they are not producing, just surviving. The good news is that the girls seemed to have ramped up their egg production to almost 2 dozen a day, which is amazing for 28 hens, considering it's winter and half of them are molting. The temperature inside on a day like this gets up into the mid eighties during the day, if you are out and about on the south end and need to thaw out, and warmer days must be coming soon.

For anyone with a serious need for tomatoes: I just put 5lbs of vine-ripened organic heirloom tomatoes in the farmstand in the refrigerator for a price of $10 dollars!

I believe I have solved the theft problem at the greenhouse, and I'm going to leave the set-up just as it is. I have eggs, greens, and lots of tomatoes in the farmstand in the refrigerator. In fact, today and Wednesday only, organic, vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes are only $2 a pound. In the middle of November!

These two tomatoes fell on me while I was up on a ladder. they were both on the same little vine, and I moved something the wrong way. They have a few scrapes, but the big one weighs a little less than a pound and a half. and the other one was 1.15 lbs. Not bad for November tomatoes.

Barbara and I have been comparing large tomatoes, mostly one-pounders several in the 1.10-1.15 pound range but today I picked one that weighed 1.3 pounds. I's not the prettiest tomato, but it's the biggest so far. It is tomato time. We also have 7 pints of mixed cherry tomatoes, fresh eggs, greens, peppers, summer squash and more.

We have pint containers of Cherry tomatoes, there are 5 different varieties in every pint, and today only, while they last, they are $2.50. There are also 5 dozen fresh eggs this morning, the girls are busy. There is no comparison between fresh eggs and other eggs.

Even after the farmer's market is closed, the "Farmstand in the Refrigerator" is open at the South Street Greenhouse. We have fresh, organic Salad greens, Spicy Mix (over 20 different greens), in 5 oz containers, fresh eggs, organic tomatoes, peppers or cukes at $3 a pound, and cherry tomatoes at $3 a pint. If you want to buy it where it's grown, stop in. Open 24 hours a day!

I put some real tomatoes in the "farmstand in the refrigerator" today. They are organic heirloom "triple crop" tomatoes and I priced them at around $3 a pound (example 2/3lb tomato is 2$). We have found that while these appear "mostly ripe", and a day in a window will turn them very red, they can be eaten today!
