This Saturday, June 13, at 8 am, in City Park, is the place to be.

Not only is it the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the so-called Mother Road, but it's also the 20th annual running of the historic Route 66 10K race/walk in Edwardsville. If you can't walk or run--it's sold out this year--why not spectate or volunteer? And, if not this year, how about the next?

Henderson is a continuing proud sponsor of this really fun community race through the streets of downtown Edwardsville, hosted by the Metro Milers running/walking club.

The housing crisis doesn’t exist only in the United States. Our neighbor to the north—in particular, Toronto, Canada—is also deep within an affordability emergency. But there’s some hope to be had. Evidence the Quayside project, a collaborative effort among Alison Brooks Architects in the UK (https://alisonbrooksarchitects.com/), Henning Larsen (https://henninglarsen.com/), and Adjaye Associates (https://www.adjaye.com/)—the co-lead architects—with nature-based design studio SLA (https://www.sla.dk/ #) providing its landscape expertise.

In Toronto’s urban heart, along the shores of Lake Ontario, the planned design will transform a currently disused 12-acre former industrial brownfield into what will likely be Canada’s largest mass-timber structure with individual housing units that can accommodate families (perhaps even multigenerational ones!).

The project kicked off “by redefining who these buildings are for and how they are built,” and it will more than double the amount of affordable housing along the waterfront in a city consistently ranked one of the planet’s most livable. “The fact that more than half of the approximately 800 new affordable housing units planned for the early construction phase are designed with large square footage for families demonstrates the project’s sincerity regarding social justice,” Architizer reports.

Indigenous stewardship also reflects in the project thanks to partnerships with Indigenous consultancy groups like Two Row.

Finally, this looks to be a full electric neighborhood that homes in on net-zero carbon emissions with an urban farm on the roof to boot, offering up a resilient and sustainable model for cities (https://resilientcitiesnetwork.org/city-resilience-framework/).

𝗔 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

This house, personified, just may stand alongside the people who speak for the trees. In Poznań, Poland, the House Among the Trees sows itself quietly into the small pine forest without detracting from it. Representing a collaboration between Wrzeszcz Architekci, (architectural design) and mode:lina™ (interior concept and design), the 5112-square-foot home separates functions in this family home for a couple and their three sons.

On the ground floor, there’s the shared living area, while the upper level forms the private area with bedrooms and wardrobes. “The basement houses the technical zone with a garage, and tall pine trees naturally shade the building, allowing the use of large glazed openings. As a result, the interiors open widely toward the surrounding nature. The palette of façade materials was selected to harmonize with the landscape and echo the rhythm of the forest.”

The pleasant echoes of this single-family residence are heard across the ocean as we end this eventful week.

Have you ever heard of Nashville’s Sun Cows? If not, get ready to hear much more about this solar project in Christiana, just outside Nashville, Tenn., that integrates cattle into a solar array—all to meet growing energy demands for data centers (no comment on those rn) and a burgeoning population.

According to reports, Silicon Ranch kicked off an experiment the last week of April that holds, beneath its solar arrays, “lush pasture instead of gravel, enjoyed by a small herd of cattle that spends its days munching grass and resting in the shade.”

Silicon Ranch owns this 40-acre farm in Christiana, and they’re betting that “cattle-grazing is the next frontier in so-called agrivoltaics, which mostly has involved growing crops or grazing sheep beneath the panels.”

The project has a one-year data-gathering period in which it hopes to show farmers that other livestock than sheep or goats—namely cows—can also can thrive at solar agricultural sites.

Here’s a slice of how it works: “Workers rotate the cattle — currently 10 cows and their calves — between paddocks every few days so panels on the ungrazed portion of the site operate normally, generating a supply of roughly 5 megawatts of electricity for Middle Tennessee Electric, a rural electric co-op.”

Naturally, investors and Silicon Ranch itself hopes that the technology eventually will be adopted more broadly, while helping cattle farmers also preserve their way of life and providing less-harmful (renewable) solar energy.

As we commend the sacrifices of our veterans and their families this Memorial Day, we would also like to invite you to the National Memorial of Military Ascent D-Day ribbon-cutting on June 6. This morning unveiling of 12 life-sized bronze sculptures, by Carolina Bronze Sculpture, Inc,. depicting soldiers in the D-Day conflict in 1944 at Pointe du hoc, France, will be followed by a dance and celebration, where period attire is encouraged. Tickets are still available and go toward funding phase one of this memorial and living museum to all branches of service.

Would you have ever thought that fish-pond sludge could be repurposed into something sustainable and useful? Well, that day could be coming, thanks to BENTU Design.

Beginning in 2022, in China, BENTU Design began research into the conversion of contaminated pond sludge into unfired ceramic-based panels that can be used in construction. “The process uses alkali-activated geopolymer technology, which eliminates the need for high-temperature kiln firing typically required in conventional ceramsite production.”

Using the Pearl River Delta and its aquaculture waste, including a toxic excess of nitrogen, pathogens, phosphorous, and heavy metals, this project—titled “The Metamorphosis of Mud: From the Collapse of Mulberry-Fish Pond Systems to the Redemption of Circular Materials,” aims to do just that.

It will be regenerative and circular designs at their finest, and we hope to see this process refined, repeated, and improved upon for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

𝗠𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚

May is abuzz with positive activity here at Henderson. Today, there's the dedication for the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower in Hartford, Ill., which we're so proud of, and later in May there's the Firemen's Park Pavilion ribbon-cutting and concert, and in June the big kick-off for the National Memorial of Military Ascent and its life-size re-enactment in bronze sculptures ascending the bluffs as happened on D-Day.
