With extreme heat and limited rainfall affecting much of the region, now is an important time to check on your green roof!
Sedum is hardy, drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance—but it is still a living system. Prolonged periods of hot, dry weather can create stress, especially for newly installed sedum mats that are still establishing their roots.
During extreme heat, be sure to:
• Inspect the roof regularly for signs of stress
• Check the growing media beneath the plants
• Water thoroughly so moisture reaches the root zone
• Water in the early morning when possible
• Pay extra attention to edges, corners, and areas near reflective walls or rooftop equipment
One watering may not be enough during an extended heat wave, so continued monitoring is important.
A little extra care during challenging weather can help protect plant health, maintain coverage, and support the long-term performance of your green roof.
