Creating Space to Think: What One Hansen Plastics Book Club Learned from A Minute to Think by Juliet Funt



At Hansen Plastics Corporation, our book clubs continue to challenge us to grow—not only as employees, but as people. Our latest read, A Minute to Think by Juliet Funt, sparked meaningful conversations around the constant pressure many feel to stay busy and move from one task to the next.

One of the book’s most impactful concepts was the importance of creating intentional “white space”—time to think, reflect, and reset. Our teams discussed how busyness can leave little room for creativity, problem solving, or meaningful connection, both professionally and personally.

A discussion that especially resonated with our group centered around back-to-back meetings. Many shared how difficult it can be to process one meeting before immediately entering another, often leaving people overwhelmed trying to track conversations, commitments, and action items from several meetings at once.

As a result, some leaders began intentionally scheduling meetings 10 minutes past the hour to create a small buffer between meetings. While simple, it gave employees time to regroup, capture notes, and mentally prepare for what was next. It became a great example of how small, intentional changes can create healthier and more thoughtful work habits.

At HPC, our book clubs are about much more than reading. They are opportunities to learn from one another, challenge old habits, and continue building a culture rooted in growth, empowerment, and open-minded approaches.

Sometimes the most productive thing we can do… is take a minute to think.
