Heavy Timber is based in Elkview, West Virginia, but most people meet us through a local representative.

Our reps are independent and spread across the country, and several are builders or run timber frame installation crews of their own. Right now you'll find them in places like Virginia, Missouri, Illinois, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, each with local knowledge of the land and the area.

A timber great room is a different room at different times of day.

Morning light comes in low and shows the grain along every beam. By afternoon, the trusses overhead fade into soft shadow and the room settles. Once the sun goes down and the lamps come on, the timber warms to a deep amber and the ceiling feels closer, in a good way.

It's the same frame the whole time. Wood responds to light more than most materials do, so it's worth seeing a timber home at more than one hour of the day.

Four pavilions, four sizes, depending on how many people you plan to put under the roof.

The Serenity is 12' x 12'. The Charleston is 16' x 16'. The Smokey Mountain is 24'6" x 25'. The Traverse City is the largest at 24' x 36'.

If your crew hasn't raised a timber frame before, that shouldn't stop you from taking one on.

Along with the timbers and drawings, we can provide an experienced installation crew or an on-site advisor who understands the building science behind a correct install. Builders new to timber frames get someone to lean on when they're least familiar.

Before your timber ships, it goes through three steps: sanding, color, and a sealed finish.

First, the surface is sanded with fine-grade sandpaper until it's smooth to the touch. Then comes color, either a stain or a Danish oil, which soaks into the wood and brings out the grain. Last, two coats of polyurethane seal it, usually in satin so the finish stays soft and natural.

All of it happens in our shop, before the timbers reach your site. By the time they arrive, the finish work is already behind them.

Most dining rooms are rectangles. The Tranquillity's is segmented and round.

It's one of the details that sets this 3,700 square foot ranch apart from the usual open floor plan. The great room, kitchen, and dining area share one connected space on the main floor, and the round dining area gives it a shape you don't see often. Three bedrooms, three full baths, all on one level.

Can't pick between a King Post and a Queen Post? There's a truss that doesn't make you choose.

The King and Queen Post combines both. You get more upright timbers and more visual detail than either one has alone, which makes it a good fit for a room where the ceiling is meant to be the main event.
