Northern Minnesota deserves facts, not fear-driven narratives.

A recent Minnesota DNR ruling reaffirmed what many in our region already know: Minnesota’s environmental review and permitting process is among the most rigorous in the nation, and existing rules are designed to protect the Boundary Waters.

Mining projects in our state still face extensive environmental review, tribal consultation, public input, and science-based permitting standards. That hasn’t changed.

What this ruling does show is that Northern Minnesota workers and communities deserve a process rooted in science, fairness, and facts - not misinformation and endless delay.

Read this Duluth News Tribune piece from MiningMinnesota Executive Director Julie Lucas about why this decision matters for the Iron Range, our economy, and responsible resource development.

The Twin Metals team was delighted to host third graders from Ely Public School District 696 today at our facilities in Ely! We enjoyed spending time with these enthusiastic learners and showing them all about the minerals that are underneath the ground in northern Minnesota.

From the recent Duluth News Tribune Our View: Ensure Minnesota's minerals stay 'close to home'. The U.S. ... could step up it's processing capabilities, giving mines, and potential mining operations, whether in Northeastern Minnesota or elsewhere, additional and more-affordable options.

Opponents of copper-nickel mining in Northeastern Minnesota like to repeat the baseless charge that the minerals mined here are going to be exported to China — meaning Minnesota’s natural resources would be used to help benefit one of our nation’s biggest adversaries.

“That couldn’t be further from the truth,” Kathy Graul of Twin Metals Minnesota, which has invested more than 16 years and $650 million to open a jobs-producing underground mine near Ely, said in an April 16 interview with the News Tribune Opinion page. “We at Twin Metals have identified processing capacity within North America, and our intention is to keep our minerals as close to home as possible.”

Exploration helps research mineral deposits, inform long-term planning, and ensure that any future proposals are based on real data and not assumptions. Companies follow strict best practices, including sound-dampening equipment and dark-sky-friendly lighting, to minimize temporary impacts.

Hear more from Kathy Graul (Twin Metals Minnesota) and Julie Lucas (MiningMinnesota) on how exploration works, what it means for state-managed minerals, and why this early scientific work matters.
