I was given this amazing gift by my friend and colleague, . Holy cow, what a beautiful whomper to straighten out bends and twists. It’s an honor to have a tool like this in the shop.

Which side does the horn go on?

I bought this “unnamed” suspected Arm & Hammer anvil the other day. Wasn’t sure why, but it’s in interesting shape. New old stock, looks untouched by a hammer. But it has sat somewhere muddy and gross, because the whole this is very pitted with rust. Looks like an old barn find.
As luck would have it, it fits all of my hardy tools perfectly, which no other anvil of mine does! So this lovely lady gets a place of pride in my shop from here on out.

May for Makers- day 27- make time for you.
Blacksmithing is for me an art- as such I feel it is an expression of my inner life. The richer the inner life, the richer the art.
Paradoxically, when I work at my art I can’t work at my art. Only when I take time for leisure, time for inspiration, time for me- then my art flows freely from my inner life.
This weekend I spent time with my love in San Francisco, and took some time to see the Redwoods, a bucket list item.
And wouldn’t you know it, I found a little handmade ironwork at the visitors center!
Inspiration strikes always- we have only to be open to it.

May For makers Day 25: traditions.
I haven’t been diligently following along with May For Makers, but I had every intention of doing so. I ran out of steam- teaching high school, commuting 3 hours on weekends, and just feeling unmotivated got to me. But after last weekend, I feel motivated again.
Tradition. A wacky, wild word. And my picture hardly seems to go with it.
My tradition is hard work. My dad always put in. Hard work in all he did, and made things with his hands. He made them well. I try and do the same. This picture is a hot cut I made for my big 350 lb fisher anvil. The shank is 1 1/4, and the starting stock was 2.5 round. It was a massive amount of work, but I’m glad I did it this way. All forged from one piece. What I want to hand down to my children one day is the value of hard work!

This past weekend I worked in the brand new shop at in . This new “old” shop was recently completed and features a newly restored double action bellows. I was extremely honored to be a part of the history and preservation of the Catoctin Iron Furnace, and love being a blacksmith around such a historic iron town!
