Today we have another lantern from the collection that survived the fire. This lantern has windows not of glass, but of mica, a mineral that forms in semi-translucent sheets. Mica is heat-resistant, flexible, and durable. It was known historically as "Muscovy glass" and was used for lanterns, stoves, and lampshades.

These two buckets survived the flames fairly well despite being located near the center of the fire. They were stored on a lower shelf, keeping them away from the most intense flames and heat, which destroyed items stored higher up.

We're pretty happy about how well this tall stoneware crock cleaned up. Stoneware crocks were durable and waterproof storage vessels used to preserve food without refrigeration. They were commonly used for storing pickled vegetables like sauerkraut, butter, salt-cured meats, and water-glassed eggs, as well as staples like lard and flour.

Today we have a collection of miscellaneous wooden objects that survived the flames, including a wooden printing block that reads "John Knoop." Like the Sheets Mill stencil, this wood printing block was used to mark barrels of cornmeal or other agricultural products. The small box in the lower left corner was used to store tea and had a lock to keep the valuable commodity safe. The object in the upper righthand corner is a coffee mill that could also have been used to grind small amounts of grain or spices.
