In construction, we carry a lot. Long hours. Time away from home. Pressure to provide. Responsibility for the crew. The expectation to keep pushing. And sometimes those things can start to feel larger than life.

As we end Mental Health Awareness Month, remember: Anyone can help. Together, we can save lives.

Heat safety isn’t always high-tech. Sometimes it’s making sure the next water bottle gets handed out in 20 minutes.

Especially during peak summer work, heat safety takes a crew effort.

At Mears, our crews use a designated “water monitor” to help keep water moving across the job site and make sure teammates stay hydrated.

Their job is simple. Keep coolers full. Keep water moving. Keep an eye on the crew. Remember, by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already behind.

Take the heat seriously before it becomes serious.

It’s going to be a hot, dry summer, and out in the field, that heat hits harder. Long days, heavy work, and hot equipment can turn heat into a serious hazard fast.

Heat illness starts with the small signs you can catch early: fatigue, headaches, slowed reactions, and confusion.

For Heat Safety Awareness Week, remember: heat is a life-threatening hazard. Our mission is to eliminate, life-threatening, life-altering, and life-ending events.

Every day in the field, crews catch hazards before they become incidents.

A hand stopped before a pinch point.
A damaged tool pulled from service.
A hazard corrected before work begins.

The Good Catch Program helps turn those moments into shared lessons across the jobsite. It keeps crews engaged, encourages people to speak up, and reinforces looking out for one another before something serious happens.

That mindset was on full display last week when one Colorado jobsite submitted 20 Good Catches in a single week for the first time — a strong sign that proactive hazard recognition is continuing to gain momentum in the field.

Thank you to Safety Manager Jimmy Gibbs and the crews continuing to lead by example every day for sharing this win!

Last week, six students from the FutureForward at Bollman program at Washington Square in Thornton, CO signed on with Mears, ready to begin their careers in the trades.

FutureForward’s Career and Technical Education program connects students with real opportunities to earn certifications, gain hands-on experience, and explore meaningful career paths. We’re proud to be part of that effort for the second year in a row.

A big thank you to our Electric team for investing their time in mentoring students and helping them see a future in construction. That kind of leadership makes a difference.

“Are we doing enough? Can we do more?” As Construction Safety Week comes to a close, that’s the question Mears President Gifford Ludwigsen wants us to carry forward.

“From the foreman setting a lane closure to every person supporting the work, safety isn’t routine. It’s a responsibility. The moment it feels routine is when complacency sets in.”

“Look at the task, the energy, the controls, and ask it again: ‘Are we doing enough?’”

Our safety mission is clear: eliminate life-threatening, life-altering, and life-ending events. Ask your supervisor for the Safety Review Manual and plan the work right before it begins.

Everything can change in a split second. When something doesn’t look right, that’s the moment that matters.

Stop Work Authority is how we protect each other in real time:
🔶 WE START WHEN SAFE – Verify controls are in place, functioning, and effective before work begins.
🔶 WE STOP IF UNSURE – Stop work at any point to double-check or confirm the appropriate controls are in place.

Every day is Skilled Trades Day around here, but today we say it loud and clear.

This work is more than labor, it’s legacy. Built by the people before us and carried forward by the crews in the field today.

In Ft. Lupton, Colorado, that pride shows up in how the work gets done.

The “Why I Work SAFE” initiative, created by Travis Duffy and Jarek Ortega with their crews, brings that mindset to life. Crews carry cards with photos of family, friends, and pets—real reminders of what’s at stake—making safety personal on every job.

During Construction Safety Week, it’s a reminder that safety isn’t just part of the job. It’s the standard we live by.

Thank you to the skilled tradesmen and women keeping this country’s energy systems running strong.
