In remote locations and during emergencies, the challenge can be even greater when water must be transported long distances or conventional infrastructure is unavailable.

The impact of heat pump technology extends beyond energy efficiency.

According to the IEA’s Heat Pump Monitor 2026, heat pumps avoided an estimated 53B m³ (~1.9T ft³) of natural gas use in 2025 for building heating across Europe, Japan and China.

Without heat pumps, natural gas consumption for building heating would have been more than 10% higher in Europe and around 35% higher in Japan and China.

These figures highlight the broader role heat pump technology can play in reducing reliance on natural gas and strengthening energy resilience as energy systems continue to evolve.

Heat pumps continue to gain ground across the U.S. heating and cooling market.

According to the IEA’s Heat Pump Monitor 2026, heat pump sales have more than doubled since 2010 and now outsell natural gas furnaces. Based on unit sales, the trend reflects growing demand for reversible systems that can provide both heating and cooling, offering an alternative to equipment designed for only one function.
