Activating emergency heat in extremely cold weather is a common recommendation, yet it is not usually the best approach. If emergency heat is required to maintain a comfortable temperature, it likely indicates an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. In a properly functioning system, auxiliary heat and the heat pump work together seamlessly. A correctly sized and installed system should maintain the desired temperature without relying on emergency heat. However, emergency heat may be necessary in certain situations, such as severe weather conditions that impact system performance. Issues with defrost mode and auxiliary heat are common causes of heat pump struggles in cold weather. Here is a more detailed article. I hope this helps.

With temperatures declining to the low 40s to high 30s, heat pumps are expected to enter defrost mode, engaging auxiliary heat to maintain warm air circulation. The initial defrost cycle can release an unpleasant odor and trigger smoke detectors. We advise heat pump and electric heat users to proactively activate their systems, raise the temperature, and initiate auxiliary heat to prevent nighttime disturbances or switch on emergency heat and raise the temperature to bring on auxiliary heat. Operating the system during the day with open doors or windows helps to dissipate the odor. If you have a natural/propane system and have yet to use your heat, you may also experience an unpleasant smell during initial use.
