The hardest HVAC question: repair it or replace it?

Here's the rule of thumb we use:

If repair cost × system age (years) exceeds $5,000 — replace it.
Example: $300 repair on a 15-year-old unit = $4,500. Borderline. But add in efficiency losses and it tips toward replace.

Other signs it's time to replace:
❌ Breaks down more than once a year
❌ R-22 refrigerant (no longer manufactured)
❌ Uneven temps room to room
❌ Energy bills keep climbing
