Before the internet, before the phone book, there was the city directory. These privately compiled publications listed the residents, businesses, and institutions of a specific town or city.

On , it’s a look at the 1928 Euclid City Directory and an ad for…The Continental Products Company!

We were a big deal then, too, with a dedicated address to receive international telegraph and cable messages!

Thankfully, getting in touch with CPC is a little easier these days. When you need a custom coating, you can reach us online, by phone, or, if you're feeling nostalgic, we suppose we could dust off the telegraph.

A lot has changed since 1928 but our commitment to solving coating challenges hasn't. https://www.continentalpaints.com/

Not all metals react to oxygen and moisture the same way.

• Iron and steel form iron oxide, or rust, which can flake away and expose fresh metal underneath, allowing corrosion to continue.
• Copper develops a brown or black oxide layer and can eventually form a green patina that helps protect the underlying metal.
• Aluminum forms a thin, tightly bonded oxide layer that helps protect the metal beneath it.
• Zinc forms a protective coating that helps slow corrosion, which is why it's used as a protective coating for steel.

The takeaway is that understanding how a metal reacts to its environment is an important part of choosing the right coating and corrosion-protection strategy.

CPC has been formulating coatings for demanding applications for more than a century. From industrial equipment to architectural applications, the right coating starts with understanding what you're protecting, and what you're protecting it from.

CPC has been innovating for a long time.

In the 90s, CPC tackled a tricky challenge: how do you put a durable finish on flexible foam without damaging the foam itself?

The answer was a waterborne PVC/polyurethane coating designed to flex with the foam while avoiding the shrinkage and cellular damage associated with solvent-based systems.

We also pioneered an interesting manufacturing application: spraying the coating into a mold before the foam was injected, essentially building the finish into the process.

The innovation tells a story: CPC has always looked for better ways to solve coating challenges, and that continues today.

CPC has been formulating coatings since 1916. A lot has changed since then, but the basic job of a coating hasn’t changed: protect the surface and make it perform.

The basic goal hasn't changed in 110 years: Protect the surface. Make it perform. Make it last.

The future of coatings is custom.

We LOVE Hearing No

“No, that resin won’t work.”
“No, it has to cure faster.”
“No, we can’t bake it at 400°F.”
“No, it has to survive that chemical.”
“No, we need it in this color.”
“No, our line can’t apply it that way.”

That’s where custom formulation gets interesting.

At CPC, we don’t believe every coating problem has an off-the-shelf answer. Our chemists work with customers to formulate coatings around the substrate, application process, performance requirements, and production environment.

Because it’s not “Here's what we have,” it's “Tell us what you need it to do.”

Performance over product. That’s CPC.

A coating rarely goes from “looks great” to “complete failure” overnight.

There are usually warning signs. The key is noticing them before small problems becomes costly repairs.

Watch for these five:
1. Peeling or blistering
2. Cracking
3. Chalking or fading
4. Corrosion or substrate exposure
5. Loss of performance

The takeaway: Don't wait for a coating to fail completely before taking action. Regular inspections can help identify problems early and determine when maintenance, repair, or recoating makes sense.

CPC provides coating solutions designed to protect demanding surfaces and help extend service life. See a warning sign? It's probably time for a second opinion.

Not every coating solution sits in a can on the shelf.

Sometimes the substrate is unusual. The application method is demanding. The cure conditions are unforgiving. Or the coating needs to withstand chemicals, abrasion, temperature swings, and years of use.

That’s when an off-the-shelf solution may not cut it.

At CPC, custom formulation means developing a coating around the application, not forcing the application to fit an existing product.

We look at the details that matter:
🔹 Substrate
🔹 Application method
🔹 Cure conditions
🔹 Chemical exposure
🔹 Abrasion
🔹 Temperature
🔹 Production speed
🔹 Desired service life

The right coating isn't always sitting on a shelf. Sometimes, you must formulate it.

“Custom formulation” can sound like you're starting from scratch, reinventing the wheel, and making the whole process harder than it needs to be.

That's not how it works.

Sometimes the right solution is a smart modification to an existing technology. Sometimes the performance target calls for something entirely different.

Either way, the process starts with your requirements, not a predetermined formula.

At CPC, our approach is to understand what the coating needs to do, identify the performance targets, and engineer a formulation to get there because custom doesn't mean complicated, it means purposeful.

It takes people to formulate it.
People to test it.
People to manufacture it.
People to package it.
People to ship it.
People to put it to work.

Labor Day is a celebration of all of them.

Today, CPC is proud to recognize the people whose work keeps American industry moving.

3-Day Weekend Math:

Friday: 3 days = “Plenty of time.”
Saturday: 2 days = “Still plenty of time.”
Sunday: 1 day = “I'll do it tomorrow.”
Monday: 0 days = “Wait... it's already Monday?"

Enjoy it while it lasts.

CPC will be ready for your custom coating challenges…on Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend!
