⚑️ Earlier this week, the U.S. celebrated National Hydropower Day ⚑️

Hydropower has energized Oregon and the Pacific Northwest for generations β€” and it will continue to play a critical role in meeting our region’s evolving energy needs.

Through the Federal Columbia River Power System, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) delivers roughly 60% of the Northwest’s electricity from 31 hydroelectric dams.

Our system is kinda the best. Just sayin' 😏

It includes three of the largest power-producing dams in the United States:
πŸ’§ Grand Coulee
πŸ’§ Chief Joseph
πŸ’§ John Day

Hydropower = clean energy + grid stability + Northwest strength πŸ‘

🍊 Hey, what’s that orange thing?

If you've driven up Highway 126 in the last couple of weeks, you probably noticed some orange coverings on lines connected to our power poles just east of Vida.

Those are insulated line covers and pole arms. Linemen use them to touch, test, or fix live wires and energized equipment without de-energizing.

πŸ‘·πŸ» Lane Electric crews are installing covered conductor, called tree wire. This is part of our wildfire mitigation plans and a capital project that will increase the load we can carry in the McKenzie River Valley.

πŸ”Œ Let's talk system management

This week, we took one of our smaller substations offline β€” not because it’s going away, but because it’s helping us protect and better serve you.

Here's why.

πŸ”₯ Fire mitigation: Taking it out of service allows us to de-energize 17 miles of double-circuit line through wildfire-prone territory.
⚠️ Reliability: Double-circuit is more complicated when it comes to restorations. This section is also located in a heavily forested, outage-prone area.
πŸͺ’ Simplicity: We can serve members in the area without it.

So, does that mean it's being decommissioned?

πŸ”› Nope. We will keep it in operating form for resiliency. If needed, we can bring it online to perform as a backup.

πŸ‘€ Here's a great look at the use of pole wrap. This image was snapped on Washington State Route 3 in rural territory served by Mason PUD 3.

🐭 πŸ”₯ Pole wrap can be used to prevent rodents from climbing and damaging poles or to protect against weather wear or fire.

βœ”οΈ Last year, Lane Electric installed fire-retardant pole wrap for fire mitigation in areas of Oakridge.

πŸ”œ It will also be deployed in other parts of the system over the coming year.

β˜€οΈ August is peak summer trip season.

Turns out, Lane Electric staff can't help ourselves from taking photos of hydropower facilities even when we're on vacation. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And don't worry. These were taken over a few years. We don't take that many vacations.

Hope everyone is having a safe and happy summer! ✌️

🐟️ Last week the Armchair Engineer dropped this great, deep dive into the factors surrounding salmon and hydro operations on the Columbia River.

In speaking with scientists and hydro experts, he breaks down:
βœ”οΈ different types of dam spill
βœ”οΈ hydro operation
βœ”οΈ potential impact of federally mandated deep spill on salmon returns
