Access Alert: Calapooia River

For those who don’t know yet, access to the Calapooia River within the Weyerhaeuser landholdings there has been significantly limited. Last year, the previously gated stretch of Upper Calapooia Rd from mp 8.5 (where the old gate was) to mp 25 (National Forest land) was transferred back to Linn County. Myself and many others assumed the public was now allowed access to these lands. This is not the case.

I was with a group on Monday who paddled the traditional class 3 dollar drop run from the mp 13 bridge downstream about 8 miles. Our 2 put in vehicles were given a $115 parking fine each, and we were given a warning for a criminal trespassing violation. A Linn County Sheriff found us at our takeout and explained the rules. Apparently we are not allowed to park next to the road or walk on any piece of Weyerhaeuser land at any time. We are only allowed to drive on the road. This Sheriff did say if you were able to access the river when it is directly next to the road where Weyerhaeuser doesn’t own it (there are a few spots) and you had a shuttle driver to drop you off and not park there that would be ok.

This rule prevents folks from accessing the traditional put ins for both the “Upper Calapooia” (mp 13 bridge) and “Upper Upper Calapooia” (mp 22 bridge) at this time.

Bummer!

We as a community of fellow officers have lost one of our own. Officer Ledgett was on patrol 10-5-2018 and was shot and killed. He was the sole provider for his him and his wife We would to help ease some of her worry . We would like to raise enough to assist his daughter in coming here from Ca...

Here's a photo from the Lane County Marine Patrol including coordinates for the total blockage near Deer Creek on the McKenzie River. The trees act like a low-head dam that can cause boat entrapment, as indicated by the photo. Marine Patrol deputies recommend putting in downstream of this obstruction and advise not pushing over the two trees because due to the height of the third tree and the distance from the middle tree.
