Hail is the most consistently damaging hazard of severe thunderstorms in the U.S., driving more than $10 billion in losses every year over the last 14.

And yet, the U.S. hadn’t run a major hail-focused field campaign since the 1980s.

JANUS is proud to be one of 15 organizations that joined forces on ICECHIP (In-situ Collaborative Experiment for the Collection of Hail in the Plains). Supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the team collected hail samples across the plains to build a first-of-its-kind database, using modern instrumentation and numerical modeling to close significant gaps in hail science.

Our scientists, Dr. Rebecca Adams-Selin and Dr. Anthony Bernal Ayala, are now putting that data to work and were recently featured in NOVA’s “Rain Bombs” episode discussing the research.
