Think sound engineering is a recent invention? The barn owl begs to differ.

Long before humans began engineering quieter machines, barn owls evolved specialized wings for remarkably quiet flight. Comb-like serrations along the leading edge modify airflow, fringed feather edges help reduce noise, and velvety surfaces suppress friction between feathers.

Combined with large wings that enable slow flight, these adaptations help barn owls approach prey while producing very little sound.

In simpler terms: nature mastered noise reduction long before we did.
