Starting Friday, June 19, crews from Deig Bros. will begin water service line investigation work in the Poplar Grove neighborhood as part of EWSU’s ongoing water service line inventory and replacement efforts.

As work progresses, Deig Bros. representatives will visit homes within the project area to secure right of entry forms needed to access certain properties. If your property is affected, they will explain the process and answer any questions you may have.

Residents may also experience temporary lane restrictions as crews perform investigations and, where needed, replace water service lines. Please use caution when traveling through the neighborhood and follow all posted traffic control signs.

Deig Bros would like to introduce Kris Paxson as this week’s Hard Hat Hero! 👷

Kris is an Ironworker/Steel Erector who has been working for us as a General Foreman for the last year and a half. A typical day on the job starts at our shop gathering materials he needs for the day. Once he gets on site, he comes up with a plan for the day and communicates with his crew what their goals are and spends the rest of the day helping to make sure they exceed those goals!

Kris says he enjoys every aspect of Ironworking from the great guys he gets to work with to being part of building a project from start to finish. He says it is very rewarding to be able to see your accomplishments once a project is complete.

He is proud of all the work he has done as an Ironworker, but one he is especially proud of lately is a project he is currently working on for one of our customers. They are erecting a 6-bay expansion on a structure that consists of 8X120’, 30,000 lb. trusses.

His most memorable experience so far was his first day on the job with Deig Bros. He was really impressed with how welcoming everyone was.

Kris is married to his wife, Whitney and they have two daughters, Georgia and Caroline. When they are not at work, you can find them at a basketball gym coaching Caroline’s team or taking Georgia to different cities to compete in tournaments. The girls like going to Disney and the beach but no matter where they are, they always make sure to give Kris time to go bass fishing.

We are sure glad to have Kris on board at Deig Bros. His hard work and drive to succeed and exceed are part of what make us who we are. Thank you Kris, for all you do. Congratulations on being this week’s Hard Hat Hero!

This week Deig Bros would like to introduce Kyle Davis as our Hard Hat Hero!

Kyle is a plumber/pipefitter foreman who has been with us for 9 years. Lately he spends his days doing commercial maintenance and equipment installations for a local industrial plant. His favorite thing about the work he does is meeting interesting people and the fact that he has the opportunity to work on anything from historical buildings to new construction. Kyle says his favorite job was getting to install HVAC and Plumbing on the Ford Center.

Kyle and his wife, Jaimmie have three children, Macon, Morgan, and Matthew. They also have three dogs and 16 goats! They are members of the Antique Steam and Gas Engine Club of Boonville where they share past farming and lifestyle practices with the public during their events every year.

When he is not working for us, you can find him working with local farmers helping them custom cut and bale hay. He also helps the Tennyson Brotherhood host benefit cookouts and he enjoys camping whenever possible.

Clearly Kyle is a workhorse and has quite a big personality that everyone loves! We sure appreciate his work ethic and all the hard work he puts in for us at Deig Bros. That is why we are honoring him as this weeks Hard Hat Hero! Congratulations Kyle, and thank you!

This week we would like to recognize Dan Mitchell as our Hard Hat Hero!

Dan is one of our Ironworker Foremen and has been with us for almost 4 years. He starts his day by keeping his crew informed on the tasks for the day. That could range from tying rebar to setting steel or welding moment connections. He makes sure they have everything they need to perform the day’s tasks efficiently and safely.

What he likes most about his trade is that it is not an easy job. It can be dangerous work, but it is rewarding and that is what makes it so great. Prior to his time here, Dan is proud to say that he was one of the ironworkers who got to work on the William Natcher Bridge, which is a significant accomplishment. Some of the projects he is proud to have been a part of with Deig Bros so far is the work we do out at Countrymark, as well as working on energy substations for Centerpoint. From transportation, to fuel, to utilities, it is clear ironwork plays an important role in our infrastructure.

His favorite story to talk about from his career is when he was (and this is a direct quote), "building a 7' diameter caisson, 120' long continuous spiral with #11's, 6" on center in the dead of winter on barges." Now in layman's terms, I think that translates to working on very large, hollow retaining structures and building a cage of heavy steel reinforcement tied together every 6 inches using #11 rebar, (which is an extremely large size for rebar) so they can then be filled with concrete and used as a base for a massive structure.

Dan says his lovely wife, Lauren, and his daughter, Amanda, are his world. They are his voice of reason, his calm, and his work after work. He met Lauren when she was working as a union carpenter. She now owns her own business called The Little Wood Shack. When he is not busy working, Dan enjoys fishing and camping.

We are proud to have Dan and all his experience and expertise as part of our team now. Congratulations Dan Mitchell on being this week’s Hard Hat Hero!

On behalf of EWSU, Deig Bros will be going door to door in the area of Broadway, Poplar Grove, and Franklin Street on the West side in an attempt to contact home owners and obtain right-of-entry permission to investigate water service lines.

If you choose to participate, the investigation is minimally invasive and will consist of two small excavation locations on your property to determine the water service line material. Our team will select locations to minimize disruption to your property. If a lead service were to be found, we would replace those portions of your service line and restore your property back to its original condition. All work would be completed at no cost to you.

We are sharing this in hopes to spread awareness as we realize how unnerving it can be to have an unsolicited knock at your door. Below is a copy of the notice that was mailed out to the affected home owners by EWSU. So if you see one of our employees knocking on doors, asking for signatures, it is not a sales call. He is there to offer you a free service that may lead to improving the quality and safety of your drinking water.

For we thought we would share a little about our company’s history.

The story of Deig Bros. began long before our doors officially opened in 1954.

While serving in WWII, the Deig brothers dreamed of building something of their own once they returned home. Each brother brought a different trade to the table: Al was a plumber, Art an electrician, Marion a carpenter, and Erwin a brick mason. Construction was what they knew, and more importantly, what they loved.

After the war, the brothers spent their evenings and weekends building homes together, saving every dollar they could. Their hard work and determination eventually allowed them to officially open Deig Bros. in 1954.

Within just a few short years, Deig Bros. became signatory to nearly all the local unions and quickly earned a reputation for quality workmanship, integrity, and reliability. That strong foundation helped establish a lasting presence in our community that continues more than 70 years later.

Though we are no longer building residential homes, having transitioned exclusively to commercial and industrial construction, some of the homes we built are still standing today and represent a timeless era of craftsmanship and style that many people are still drawn to.

The second generation of the Deig family owners included Steve, Ron, Craig, and David Deig, as well as Dick Martin. They spent their careers working hard and earning the trust of their fathers to not only maintain the family business, but to lead us into the 21st century as a strong contender in the industry.

Our current leadership consists of President Wes Deig and his father, Vice President Craig Deig, descendants of founder Al Deig, along with Thomas Fink, who has become an honorary family member through his loyalty, hard work, and dedication; qualities that reflect the principles our foundation is built on. These men are proud to be tasked with carrying on the legacy the Deig brothers built from the ground up, while continuing to grow our business and lead us into the future of commercial construction.

Please enjoy these photos of our founders. If anyone else in the family has more pictures to share, please feel free to leave them in the comments.

This week our Hard Hat Hero is Jake Schweizer!

Jake has been with us for a total of 10 years. He spent two years of his Carpenter apprenticeship working for us on the Ford Center project. He has been back with us for the last 8 years and is now one of our Field Superintendents.

He starts his day filling out his jobsite safety documentation and has safety talks with his crew. He gets everyone lined out and assigned to their tasks for the day, then begins to look ahead and plan out what needs to happen to keep the jobsite running smoothly and the project moving forward. He orders any materials that they need and fills out required documents, but he also jumps in to do his part of the dirty work too.

His favorite thing about his career is seeing a job through from start-up to completion. There is a great deal of satisfaction in starting from nothing and being able to hand a completed project over to our customers and getting to share that accomplishment with family and friends. Jake says another thing he loves about working here is having such a great group of men and women to work with at Deig Brothers, especially when one of them is his own brother, Sam Schweizer. He loves getting the chance to work side by side with his brother now and then, even though it is rare.

He doesn't have one job in particular that stands out as a favorite, but he is pretty proud to say he got to be a part of bringing the Ford Center to Evansville. The Ford Center was a very significant project for our city, and a lot of our people have said they are proud to have had a hand in building the facility. Jake was an apprentice at the time, and we partnered him up with "Snappy" (recent retiree, Chris Campbell) and they spent most of their time out on that project. Once that was completed, Jake ventured out to other jobs before making his way back here, but says he really enjoyed that time working with Snappy. While they surely had some good times working together, he says he is going to keep his favorite jobsite stories to himself LOL.

Outside of work, Jake and Ashely Whitsell have two daughters together. Avery is 8 and Kennedy is 3. He loves spending time with his family and venturing out on vacations or small trips. Right now, they are finishing up baseball season and are about to move into soccer season for their girls. He considers himself very family oriented, coming from a big family himself, there is always something going on. He and Ashley love to take the kids on trips, attend sporting events, go out to eat, and just spend quality family time together. When he gets a rare chance to have some free time to himself, you can find Jake on the golf course.

We are proud to honor Jake this week as our Hard Hat Hero! He has proven himself to be a good leader and we have entrusted him to run some of our larger and more complicated projects. Congratulations, Jake! Keep up the great work!
