Duty. It's a powerful word, laden with character and sacrifice, but also with honor and love. The firefighters in California have been on our minds. These brave men and women voluntarily commit to protecting their communities from fire, never imagining they would face the challenges they are right now.

This is the reality of volunteering for service, whether in a paid or volunteer department: You are pledging yourself to the unknown. You are saying, “Yes. Even if my entire community is engulfed in flames, I will stay and help. Even if my family needs me, I will remain here to assist.”

Because it's not just the firefighters who bear this duty. The families who support these firefighters are also committed to service, never expecting that one day they would experience the anxiety of their loved one being involved in a prolonged, dangerous, and intense firefight. Each agonizing minute brings the fear that they might become a statistic—lost in the line of duty.

Duty is a heavy line to tow, yet firefighters and their families carry it proudly. More than 7,500 emergency personnel are fighting the LA fires. We sincerely ask you to include them in your prayers.
