MaD BoV This research is supported by Alaska EPSCoR NSF award -1757348 and the state of Alaska.

The goal of MaDBoV is to use geotagged images collected by the public to improve accuracy of fire fuel maps created from satellite imagery of the boreal forest.

Members of our team over the weekend had their paper "Improved Boreal Forest Wildfire Fuel Type Mapping in Interior Alaska Using AVIRIS-NG Hyperspectral Data" published in Remote Sensing.

In Alaska the current wildfire fuel map products were generated from low spatial (30 m) and spectral resolution (11 bands) Landsat 8 satellite imagery which resulted in map products that not only lack the granularity but also have insufficient accuracy to be effective in fire and fuel management at....

Grad students on our Team, Chris Smith and Anushree Badola, presented their research at the 2020 AGU fall conference.

Chris' poster was titled "Assessing Burn Severity in the Alaskan Boreal Forest using Remote Sensing Methods". He was able to generate burn severity maps with 83% accuracy.

Anushree's poster was titled "Simulating AVIRIS-NG Hyperspectral Image from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Image for Improved Wildfire Fuel Mapping, Boreal Alaska". Badola's simulated date was able to map vegetation at an 84% accuracy.

Dr. Franz Meyer is teaching a course on Microwave Remote Sensing this spring semester. This course is available to both UAF and Non-UAF students. More information below:

University of Alaska (UA) students, please register via https://www.alaska.edu/uaonline/
Non-UA students, please follow the instructions on the class homepage for registration
More information about the class at: https://radar.community.uaf.edu/ and in the flyer attached.
Start date: Jan 12, 2021
Teaching mode: Synchronous online

Brief Course Description: The class teaches the fundamentals of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Remote Sensing and its many applications to geoscience and geohazard-related questions. Modern cloud-based labs introduce you to the latest software tools and workflows in SAR and InSAR and touch on subjects such as surface water mapping, forest and agriculture monitoring, and surface deformation measurements related to volcanic and seismic activity. More information in the class syllabus.

IARC and the Alaska Fire Science Consortium released Alaska's Changing Wildfire Environment today!

The report uses compelling visuals to show how Alaska’s vast and complex wildfire environment is changing. Learn about recent wildfire trends in Alaska, their impacts to humans and climate change, and the strong relationship between wildfire managers and scientists to improve fire-related decision making.
