SABG is honored to recognize Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Roy Varnon Sr., a decorated U.S. Army aviator who served for 26 years.
Drafted into the Army in 1955, LTC Varnon went on to serve two tours in Vietnam, where he served as the U.S. Army Vietnam Staff Aircraft Maintenance Officer supporting approximately 4,500 aircraft. He later commanded the 295th Aviation Company (Heavy Helicopter) in Germany, earning the call sign “Sky Crane Six,” and was qualified in 26 models of Army helicopters and airplanes. He concluded his military career at the Pentagon as Aviation Team Chief within the U.S. Army ODCSOPS Requirements Directorate.
His distinguished service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, five Air Medals, and two Meritorious Service Medals, as well as Senior and Master Aviator badges.
Upon retiring, Jerry became the Broker/ Owner of M.A.M.I.R.E. Realty, Inc. Beyond his accomplishments, Jerry is remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and “Papa.” Jerry is connected to SABG through a member of our Business Development team, Elizabeth Varnon. Although he passed in 2020, "Papa's" legacy continues inspiring Ms. Varnon with his optimism, determination, resilience, and work ethic.
