RePurpose Energy

RePurpose Energy Repurpose Energy builds next-generation energy storage systems by giving EV batteries a second life.

04/21/2026

Most people don't realize how hard it is to deploy a second-life battery system at a commercial site. You need Fire Department approval, city permitting, utility interconnection, UL 1974, and more. Four separate gates — and most projects never clear them all.

RePurpose Energy just did.

A medical clinic in Novato, California now runs on 200 kWh of second-life battery storage, solar on the roof, and multi-day backup power every time PG&E calls an outage. One of the first fully permitted, utility-approved systems of its kind in the country.

The batteries powering it? They would have been scrapped.

If you run a commercial building, cold-storage facility, manufacturing line, or data center and want to explore what this could mean for your operation, visit repurpose.energy.

A lithium-ion e-bike battery caught fire inside a San Jose
apartment on April 4 and killed one person.

The San Jose Fire Department said these fires produce thick, toxic
smoke within seconds — including carbon monoxide and gases
dangerous enough that even firefighters require full protective
equipment to enter.

This is the fundamental vulnerability of lithium-ion battery
storage. Thermal runaway doesn't give you time. It cascades.

Repurpose Energy holds US Patent 12,176,499 B2 for fire
suppression technology using non-conductive liquid — designed to
intervene before thermal runaway reaches this point. Days later,
San Francisco introduced legislation to ban non-certified
lithium-ion batteries after 120 fires in five years.

One person died Friday morning after trying to extinguish a fire caused by an e-bike’s rechargeable battery at a San Jose apartment, fire officials said.

Most people don’t know how fast a battery fire spreads.

One cell short-circuits. Heat jumps to the next cell, then the next. In seconds, the entire pack is engulfed. It’s called thermal runaway — and it’s the biggest safety barrier in battery adoption.

We patented a system that stops it. A non-conductive fluid floods the module, boils on contact, and pulls the heat out. The fire never spreads. Only one cell is lost.

Batteries are the new oil.
By 2030, 11 million EV batteries will reach end of first life — with 70% of their capacity still intact.
They’re not dead. They’re just ready for their second job.
At Repurpose Energy, we turn retired EV batteries into certified energy storage systems that power buildings and grids for another 10–15 years. The circular battery economy isn’t a future concept. It’s already underway.

Most people don't realize how battery fires actually start.

It's not a single big failure — it's a chain reaction called thermal runaway. One cell overheats, heats the cell next to it, and within seconds the whole pack is gone.

Repurpose Energy patented a suppression system that stops it at the source. The fire stays contained to the cell where it started. Everything else survives.

The patent (US 12,176,499 B2) is now available for licensing — for EV manufacturers, drone makers, data centers, and energy storage companies who want this built into their products.

We're currently raising funds on StartEngine to scale the broader Repurpose Energy platform. If this is the kind of technology you want to see in the world, check the link in the comments.

We’re grateful for the support and recognition from the UC Davis College of Engineering.

Repurpose Energy began as research at UC Davis and has grown into a startup focused on giving retired EV batteries a second life as energy storage systems.

Turning battery waste into energy infrastructure is an important step toward building a more sustainable and resilient energy future.

Thank you to the UC Davis engineering community for highlighting our work.

It’s exciting to see growing interest in the second-life EV battery ecosystem.

Repurpose Energy recently hosted participants from the EJ Standards for EV Battery Repurposing Workshop, where they had the opportunity to see firsthand how retired EV batteries can be safely repurposed into energy storage systems.

Turning battery waste into energy infrastructure is an important step toward a more sustainable and circular energy future.

Thank you to GAIA US Canada for highlighting the visit and the broader conversation around EV battery circularity.
