If you’ve ever driven past an oil well and noticed a small flame burning from a pipe nearby, you may have wondered what it is.

That flame is called a flare, and it’s a very normal part of many oil production operations.

During oil production, natural gas and vapors are often produced alongside the oil. In some cases, these gases are routed to a flare line where they are safely burned in a controlled manner rather than being released directly into the atmosphere.

Flaring serves several important purposes:

You may notice the flame gets larger, smaller, or even goes out at times. That’s because gas production can vary depending on well conditions and operating activity.

To many people, it’s just a flame in a field. To those of us in the oilfield, it’s a small but important part of producing energy safely and responsibly.
