September is National Preparedness Month, and cold weather is hard on plumbing. Pipes contract, pressure builds, and small problems you ignored all summer tend to show up at the worst possible moment. A few things worth handling this month:

• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, then cover the spigot before the first freeze
• Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces, garages, and unheated areas
• Locate and test your main water shutoff valve
• Have your water heater inspected before it takes on colder incoming water

It sounds logical, which is why so many people do it. But your system was sized for your whole home, not part of it. Closing vents doesn't reduce how much air it moves, it just forces that air through fewer openings. The result is added pressure on your ductwork, extra strain on the blower motor, and conditioned air escaping through duct leaks instead of reaching your rooms.

If certain rooms are always too hot or too cold, the real fix is usually balancing your system or sealing your ducts. Give us a call and we’ll take a look!
