Oh boy. Fixturing that curved profile is gonna be a headache. What's a grumpy machinist to do?! Follow me on this one:
Fractal vise concept. The principal is based on curves and circles will find their natural centers. They're zen like that. So we use the curve and radii to our advantage. Futile to fight nature, baby. Pic is my reproduction of part from the lathe op.
This here is how imma grip dat bad boy! The shape is a negative mirror of the central neck of the part. There's no flat areas on the entire face of this tooling.
This is the jaw of the vise. That machined area is just a trough for the saddle tooling to ride in to stay square and flat.
The saddle tooling in the slot, where it can move in a Z direction...
So when you put the part in the saddle tooling, and throw the entire mess in the vise, and tighten- dat sumbitch finds it's own center as the co-planer curves find thier balance and center, just like they was in a Tai Chi class.
The saddle blocks ride along their slots, preventing lateral movement and allowing it's apex to engage into the curve of the part.
Rock solid setup, square and repeatable.
